Chapter 5 - The Ambush

The fallout from my freeze on Daniel’s accounts didn't take long.
It was Friday evening. The office was mostly empty.
I was packing my briefcase when my office door slammed open.
Daniel stood there, red-faced, his tie loosened and his eyes wild.
“You locked my accounts,” he roared, stepping into the room.
“I secured company assets,” I corrected calmly.
“My personal credit cards are declining! I tried to pay for dinner and the card was flagged!”
“You should have used cash. Oh, wait. You spent it all on 'consulting fees'.”
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. The anger in his face drained, replaced by sudden fear.
“What are you talking about?” he tried to bluff, but his voice cracked.
I pulled out the manila folder Marcus had given me and tossed it onto the desk.
“Tribeca. Cartier. First-class flights to Miami when you told me you were at a seminar in Chicago.”
He stared at the folder like it was a bomb.
“Natalie, I can explain—”
“Don't,” I interrupted, standing up. “Don't insult my intelligence.”
“You pushed me to this!” he yelled, cornered and lashing out.
“You emasculated me every single day. You made all the decisions. You made all the money!”
“I made the money, and I shared it with you. I gave you half the firm because you were my husband.”
“It’s not a real partnership if I have to ask for permission!”
“You didn't ask for permission to steal two hundred thousand dollars.”
He lunged forward, slamming his fists on the desk.
“I am going to ruin you. I will drag this firm through the mud in the divorce.”
“You can’t,” I said, entirely unbothered.
“Why not?” he sneered.
“Because if you fight me, I will hand this folder to the District Attorney.”
He stepped back, his chest heaving.

“You wouldn't send your own husband to jail.”
“You aren't my husband anymore, Daniel. You're just a bad investment I'm finally writing off.”
