Chapter 4 - THE MIAMI PARADISE COLLAPSES

Three hundred miles away in sunny Miami, my mother Jessi was lounging beneath a private cabana at the Grand Horizon resort, wearing oversized designer sunglasses and holding a fresh glass of fruit-infused water. Stephanie was scrolling through her phone on the adjacent lounge chair, basking in the warmth of their stolen vacation.

“This place is absolutely worth every single penny,” Stephanie sighed happily, stretching her arms toward the bright blue sky. “Can you believe Luca is still stuck in humid Singapore dealing with spreadsheets while we’re living our best lives?”

Jessi smiled smugly, adjusting her sun hat. “Your brother has zero imagination, Stephanie. He works himself to the bone because he thinks money defines a man. We just taught him a valuable lesson in wealth distribution.”

Before Stephanie could reply, her phone buzzed violently against the small glass table. She picked it up, expecting a notification from Instagram or a shopping app, but instead saw a flurry of red notification banners flashing across her screen.

“That’s weird,” Stephanie muttered, sitting up straight. “My card just got declined at the boutique by the lobby.”

“Must be a temporary banking glitch with the international servers,” Jessi dismissed lazily without opening her eyes. “Just use the backup Visa Luca doesn’t know about.”

Stephanie tapped frantically on her screen, switching apps, but her face suddenly drained of all color. The casual confidence vanished from her expression, replaced by a sudden, creeping panic. “Mom… my account balance says zero. In fact, it says negative twelve hundred dollars.”

Jessi sat up sharply, removing her sunglasses. “What are you talking about? Let me see that phone.”

Before Stephanie could hand the device over, Jessi’s own phone began vibrating incessantly against the cushion. She snatched it up and swiped to unlock the screen, only to be greeted by a glaring fraud-alert notification from her primary banking institution.

URGENT: Your accounts have been temporarily frozen pursuant to a court-ordered asset freeze and ongoing grand larceny investigation.

Jessi stared at the glowing words in stunned silence, her breath catching in her throat. “That’s… that’s impossible. Who could have frozen our accounts?”

At that exact moment, two uniformed resort security guards accompanied by the hotel manager approached their private cabana with calm, unyielding expressions. The manager stopped a few feet away, holding a formal legal document clipped to a leather folder.

“Excuse me, Ms. Miller and Ms. Taylor?” the manager asked politely, though his eyes were completely devoid of warmth.

Jessi stood up defensively, her voice rising in panic. “Yes? What is the meaning of this interruption? Do you know who we are? We are VIP guests staying in the penthouse suite!”

“We’ve received an official emergency notice from federal and state banking regulators,” the manager replied smoothly, handing over the papers. “Your payment method for the penthouse suite has been flagged as fraudulent, and all associated lines of credit have been legally frozen by court order. Furthermore, local authorities have been notified regarding outstanding financial warrants.”

Stephanie stood up, her voice cracking with hysteria. “Warrants? Are you out of your mind? We didn’t steal anything! This is a mistake!”

“You have thirty minutes to settle your outstanding incidental balance using a valid, unencumbered funding source or vacate the premises immediately,” the manager said coldly, turning on his heel and walking away, leaving the two guards stationed firmly at the edge of the cabana.

Jessi stood frozen under the blazing Miami sun, feeling a sudden, chilling frost creep down her spine that had nothing to do with air conditioning. Their luxurious paradise had just transformed into a cage, and they had no idea who had turned the key.
