Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM CONFRONTATION

Back in New York, Wendy was resting comfortably in her private hospital room, the color slowly returning to her cheeks as the IV fluids and nutritious meals did their work. Our newborn son was sleeping peacefully in his clear plastic bassinet beside her, breathing regularly with a healthy pink glow to his skin.
I sat beside Wendy’s bed, peeling an orange and feeding her small segments while we spoke in quiet, reassuring tones about our future. The heavy trauma of the past forty-eight hours still lingered in the air, but an overwhelming sense of safety had finally settled over us.
The door to the hospital room swung open abruptly, crashing against the wall with a loud bang that made us both jump.
My mother stormed into the room, her designer clothes rumpled, her hair windblown, and her face twisted in a mask of furious panic. Stephanie trailed closely behind her, looking frantic, tear-stained, and completely unraveled. They had clearly flown back from Miami on the earliest emergency standby flight they could scrounge together.
“Luca! What the hell is going on?” Jessi shrieked, marching right up to the side of the hospital bed before I could stand up to block her path. “Why are our bank accounts locked? Why did local police meet us at the airport gate in New York? Have you completely lost your mind?”
I stood up slowly, my movements deliberate and controlled. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell. I simply looked at them with a terrifying, absolute calm.
“You tell me, Mom,” I said quietly, stepping between them and Wendy’s bed. “Why would anyone freeze your accounts after you emptied my household funds and left my wife and newborn son to freeze in an unheated apartment?”
Stephanie gasped, taking a sudden step back as the color drained entirely from her face. “How… how did you know about the apartment? We told you you were in Singapore!”
“I checked the cameras,” I replied evenly.
Jessi’s expression flickered through shock, denial, and finally desperate anger. “Those cameras are private! You were spying on your own family? We were just borrowing temporary funds because your business dealings are always so risky! We were going to pay it back eventually!”
“Borrowing without permission, lying to my wife about my business collapsing, and watching her starve while you posted pictures of champagne by a pool in Miami isn’t ‘borrowing,’ Mom,” I said, my voice dropping an octave. “That’s felony grand larceny.”
“We are your family!” Stephanie screamed, tears of pure rage springing to her eyes. “You can’t ruin our lives over a stupid misunderstanding about money! Drop these ridiculous lawsuits right now, or we’ll make sure everyone in the family knows what a tyrannical control freak you are!”
“Try it,” I replied coldly, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen to play the high-definition video recording of them laughing while transferring the funds.

The audio filled the sterile hospital room, echoing off the tile walls with brutal clarity. My mother’s face went completely grey as she listened to her own voice boast about tricking Wendy and abandoning a newborn baby to freeze.
The room fell dead silent, save for the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor beside Wendy’s bed. They stood there exposed, stripped of every lie, excuse, and manipulation they had relied upon for their entire lives.
