Chapter 5 - The Hospital Bed Confession

Back in New York, the sun was just beginning to rise on New Year's Day.

I was sitting by Maya's bedside when she finally fluttered her eyes open. The IV antibiotics had started doing their job. Her fever had broken, and some color had returned to her cheeks.

"David?" she croaked, looking around the bright hospital room in confusion.

"I'm here, baby," I whispered, gently squeezing her hand. "Liam is right here too. He's sleeping in the nursery. He's perfectly healthy."

Tears welled in her eyes, and she began to sob uncontrollably. "I'm so sorry, David. I tried. I really tried to be strong. But I was in so much pain, and I couldn't get up... and they took everything..."

"Shh," I hushed her, kissing her forehead. "You have nothing to apologize for. Nothing. It's my fault. I never should have left you alone with them."

Over the next hour, Maya poured out the whole truth. It was worse than I had imagined.

The nightmare started the exact moment my plane took off for Germany. My mother had immediately dismissed the postpartum doula I had hired, claiming it was a "waste of money" and that she would take over. But instead of helping, she began a campaign of psychological torture.

She withheld Maya's pain medication, giving her only half a pill a day, claiming that Maya would become an addict. She refused to buy groceries, ordering Maya to eat cheap ramen while she and Chloe ordered expensive takeout using my credit cards. They invited Mark over, drinking my expensive wine and playing loud music while Liam cried.

"When I begged them to turn the heat back on," Maya whispered, her tears soaking the hospital pillow, "your mother told me that fresh, cold air builds character for newborns. She said I was a weak, pathetic mother."

My chest tightened with a rage so intense it physically hurt. I had spent my entire adult life providing for my mother and sister after my father passed away. I bought them cars, paid off their debts, and funded their lavish lifestyles. I thought I was being a good son. I didn't realize I was feeding monsters.

"They're gone, Maya," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "They are never going to hurt you or Liam ever again."

"What did you do, David?" she asked, seeing the look in my eyes.

"I didn't do anything," I replied. "I just let them face the consequences of their own actions. They're in jail in Miami, waiting to be extradited back to New York."

Maya gasped, covering her mouth. For a long moment, she didn't say anything. Then, she rested her head back against the pillow, and a small, quiet sigh of relief escaped her lips.
