Chapter 6 - The Arraignment and the Audacity

Two weeks later, the physical distance between Miami and New York had been bridged by federal marshals. Maya was safely back home, fully recovered and glowing as she held a happy, healthy Liam in our newly secured, warm apartment.

I, on the other hand, was standing in the back of a Manhattan courtroom.

My mother, Chloe, and Mark were brought in wearing standard orange jumpsuits. The arrogance that usually defined them had been replaced by a pathetic, desperate exhaustion. They had spent two weeks in a Miami holding cell before being transported in a cramped prison van back to New York.

Mark's parents had hired a high-priced defense attorney, but only for Mark. They made it very clear that he was throwing my mother and sister under the bus.

When the judge read the charges—Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child—the courtroom echoed with the heavy weight of their crimes.

During a brief recess, their public defender approached me in the hallway. My mother was standing a few feet away, escorted by a bailiff.

"David, please!" my mother cried out, ignoring the court rules. "You have to tell them to drop this! It was a misunderstanding! I'm your mother! You can't let them send me to prison!"

I walked slowly toward her. The bailiff tensed, but I raised my hands to show I wasn't a threat. I looked into the eyes of the woman who raised me, searching for any hint of genuine remorse. There was none. She was only sorry she got caught.

"You turned off the heat on a bleeding woman and a premature baby in fifteen-degree weather," I said, my voice loud enough for the hallway to hear. "You stole the medication she needed to survive so you could sell it or hide it. You stole food from a newborn."

"I was trying to toughen her up!" my mother shrieked, reverting to her true, narcissistic self. "She's weak, David! She's turning you against your real family!"

"Maya and Liam are my real family," I said coldly. "You are just a parasite who finally killed the host. I'm not dropping the charges. I gave the DA the security footage, the bank records, and the hospital reports. Have a nice life, Mom."

I turned my back and walked away while she screamed my name, cursing me, showing everyone in that courthouse exactly who she truly was.
