Chapter 7 - The Downfall

The legal process dragged on for months, but the outcome was inevitable. The evidence I had provided was a prosecutor's dream. High-definition video with crystal-clear audio, timestamped banking logs, and Maya's medical records detailing her near-fatal infection and hypothermia made it a slam dunk.

Mark took a plea deal first. To avoid jail time, he testified against Chloe and my mother, confirming that they had planned to drain my accounts and flee to Miami. He admitted to forging the checks under my mother's instructions. He got three years of strict probation and mandatory community service. Chloe filed for divorce the next day, but it didn't save her.

Faced with Mark's testimony and the video evidence, Chloe and my mother's public defender advised them to plead guilty to avoid a jury trial, which would undoubtedly end with maximum sentences.

In late September, they stood before the judge for sentencing.

Chloe, having no prior record, was sentenced to two years in a state correctional facility for her role in the grand larceny and child endangerment. She wept loudly in the courtroom, looking back at me, begging for forgiveness I no longer possessed.

My mother, as the mastermind who directly stole the narcotics and intentionally disabled the heating system, was shown no mercy by the judge.

"In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen such calculated, callous cruelty inflicted by a family member," the judge stated, staring down at her. "You left a vulnerable infant and a recovering mother to freeze to death so you could take a luxury vacation on your son's dime. You are a danger to society."

She was sentenced to five years in state prison.

When the gavel fell, the heavy thud echoed like the closing of a heavy door. I didn't feel joy, and I didn't feel triumph. I felt an overwhelming, profound sense of peace. The poison had finally been extracted from my life.
