Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

Evelyn hit the ballroom floor with her baby locked against her chest.
Pain exploded through her shoulder.
Around her, more than fifty guests stopped talking.
The clinking of champagne glasses ceased.
The soft jazz music playing in the background suddenly sounded like a funeral dirge.
Richard stood above his wife, furious.
His face was contorted in a mask of pure, unfiltered rage.
“You have disgraced this family!” he roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Before Evelyn could rise, Margaret Whitmore stepped forward in her dark navy gown.
The matriarch of the Whitmore empire looked down with eyes as cold as ice.
She didn't ask whether the baby was hurt.
She didn't ask whether Evelyn was hurt.
She simply pointed a manicured finger at the trembling infant.
“Take the baby away from her.”
Evelyn's expression changed.
The fear that had governed her for three years vanished in a single, terrifying heartbeat.
The maternal instinct took over, fierce and primal.
“You picked the wrong mother to threaten.”
Richard came toward her again, his fists clenched, ready to teach his obedient wife a lesson.
But this time, Evelyn fought back.
Her foot struck his chest with a strength born of pure desperation.
Richard stumbled.
He crashed backward into a heavy crystal glass table.
It shattered beneath him in a spectacular explosion of sharp shards and spilled wine.
Margaret screamed, clutching her pearl necklace.
“What have you done?!”
Evelyn stood up slowly, her knees bruised but her spine made of steel.
She was still protecting her crying baby, cradling little Leo with her left arm.
With her right arm, she swung and slapped Margaret across the face.
The sound cracked through the silent ballroom like a gunshot.
Margaret staggered back, holding her reddening cheek in absolute shock.
Then, Evelyn raised her wrist.
Her silver smartwatch illuminated the dim space.
EMERGENCY SOS — SIGNAL SENT.
The words flashed in bright, unforgiving red.
Richard stopped moving amidst the broken glass.
Margaret went pale, all the arrogance draining from her wrinkled face.
And Evelyn finally understood something terrifying.
They weren't frightened because she'd called for help.
They were frightened because they knew exactly who that signal had been sent to.
For three years, they had mocked her for being an orphan.
They had treated her like a charity case they had generously allowed into their elite circle.
But Richard had seen that watch before.
He had seen the encrypted crest on its back.
It wasn't a police distress beacon.
It was a direct uplink to the Sterling Syndicate.
The most dangerous, untraceable, and wealthiest family on the Eastern Seaboard.
Evelyn wasn't a nobody.
May you like
She was Evelyn Sterling.
And her family had just been unleashed.
