Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage Shatters

The helicopter ride back to the Sterling estate was a blur.
Evelyn sat wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket, little Leo finally sleeping peacefully against her chest.
Below them, the city lights sparkled like scattered diamonds.
For the first time in years, she felt safe.
She looked across the cabin at Alexander.
He was staring at his tablet, already making phone calls that would seal the Whitmores' fate.
Evelyn closed her eyes and let the memories wash over her.
She had left the Sterling family because she hated the isolation of extreme wealth.
She had wanted a normal job, a normal husband, a normal life.
When she met Richard Whitmore at a local charity event, he seemed perfect.
Charming. Attentive. Kind.
She had introduced herself as Evelyn Hayes, a simple art teacher.
She hid her billionaire lineage to ensure he loved her for who she was, not her bank account.
But the moment they married, the mask slipped.
Richard was deeply insecure, heavily in debt, and controlled by his overbearing mother.
Margaret hated Evelyn from day one, calling her a gold-digger.
The emotional abuse started in the first year.
The controlling behavior started in the second.
And tonight, when Evelyn had discovered Margaret planning to send baby Leo to a remote boarding school without her consent, she had finally snapped.
When she confronted them, Richard had become violent.
He had pushed her.
He hadn't realized that pushing Evelyn Hayes meant waking up Evelyn Sterling.
The helicopter landed smoothly on the rooftop helipad of the Sterling skyscraper.
Medical staff were already waiting.
They whisked Evelyn away to a private medical suite, checking her shoulder and ensuring Leo was perfectly healthy.
Later that night, Alexander walked into her luxurious suite.
“The Whitmores are trying to spin the narrative,” Alexander said, pouring two glasses of scotch and handing her a cup of warm tea instead.
“Margaret is calling her media contacts. She’s claiming you had a psychotic break and stole the baby.”
Evelyn’s grip tightened on her teacup.
“They will try to take Leo from me, Xander. Richard has judges in his pocket.”
Alexander laughed. It was a cold, humorless sound.
“Richard Whitmore thinks he has power because he has a few million dollars and a country club membership.”
Alexander leaned forward, his gray eyes flashing.
“By tomorrow morning, he won’t even have enough money to buy a cup of coffee.”
Evelyn looked at her brother.
The soft, naive girl who had fallen in love with Richard was dead.
She had died on that ballroom floor.
“Don't just bankrupt them, Xander,” Evelyn said softly.
“I want to take everything they value. I want to take their reputation.”
May you like
Alexander smiled.
“Welcome back to the family, little sister.”
