Chapter 5 - The Secret Motivation

The rapid destruction of the Whitmore family was the talk of high society.
Within three days, their cars were repossessed.
Their country club memberships were revoked.
But Evelyn wasn't satisfied.
There was a nagging question in her mind that hadn't been answered.
Why had Richard become so desperate to send Leo away?
Why the sudden, escalating violence?
She asked Alexander to look into Richard's private communications from the month before the gala.
That evening, Alexander brought a heavily encrypted file into her private study.
His face was grim.
“You need to see this, Evie. It’s worse than we thought.”
Evelyn opened the file on her laptop.
It was a series of emails and text messages between Richard and a private investigator.
As she read them, her blood ran cold.
Richard hadn't been oblivious to her identity.
He had known exactly who she was for the past six months.
The private investigator had uncovered her maiden name.
“She’s a Sterling,” one text from Richard read. “She’s worth billions. If I divorce her now, the prenup leaves me with nothing.”
The investigator’s reply: “What’s the plan?”
Richard: “If I get full custody of the kid, she’ll pay anything in alimony and child support to get him back. I need to make her look crazy. Unstable. We send the kid away, provoke her into a public meltdown, and I take everything.”
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Her heart didn't break. It turned to stone.
Every insult. Every gaslighting argument. Every bruise.
It hadn't just been a toxic marriage.
It had been a calculated, malicious scheme to steal her family's money by using her own child as leverage.
He had intentionally pushed her in the ballroom, hoping guests would see a hysterical, violent woman.
He had just underestimated her ability to fight back.
Evelyn closed the laptop.
“He didn't just hurt me, Xander. He plotted to sell my son’s future.”
“What do you want to do?” Alexander asked quietly.
Evelyn stood up.
She walked over to the mirror.
The tired, subdued woman who had worn dull dresses to appease Margaret Whitmore was gone.
Staring back at her was a Sterling.
Fierce, wealthy, and ruthless.
“Margaret is hosting her annual Charity Gala tomorrow night,” Evelyn said.
“She’s desperate. She’s using it to beg her rich friends for bailout loans.”
Evelyn turned to her brother.

“Get me a dress, Xander. Red. The color of blood.”
“We’re going to a party.”
