Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

The preparation for this day had begun exactly ninety-two days ago.

The day I found the first shell company.

I remember sitting at the kitchen island, a cold cup of coffee beside me, staring at a vendor named 'Apex Solutions.'

Apex Solutions was supposedly providing consulting services for Daniel’s latest commercial build.

They were billing fifty thousand dollars a month.

But a simple public records search showed their registered address was a rundown strip mall.

A deeper dive into the state's LLC registry revealed the registered agent: Thomas Cole.

Vanessa’s younger brother.

I didn't cry that day.

I didn't scream, and I didn't throw plates against the wall.

Anger is a useless emotion if it isn't weaponized. Instead of breaking down, I went into survival mode.

I bought a hidden hard drive.

Every night, after Daniel fell asleep—exhausted from his 'late meetings'—I went to his home office.

I downloaded bank statements.

I copied emails.

I traced IP addresses.

I cross-referenced his calendar with Vanessa’s social media posts. She wasn't nearly as smart as she thought she was, often posting pictures of expensive dinners on the exact nights Daniel claimed to be eating takeout at his desk.

Then, I took everything to Evelyn Hart.

Evelyn was a ruthless shark in a tailored suit. She was the best divorce attorney in the city, known for destroying cheating husbands with surgical precision.

When I laid the fifty-page dossier on her mahogany desk, she had raised an eyebrow.

“I was expecting tears, Claire,” Evelyn had said, flipping through the meticulously tabbed pages. “Instead, you brought me a federal indictment.”

“I want full custody of Noah,” I told her. “I want my father’s company back. And I want them with nothing.”

Evelyn smiled. It was a terrifying, beautiful smile.

“Oh, honey,” she said. “We’re going to get you a lot more than that.”

Over the next three months, we laid the trap.

Because I owned fifty percent of the holding company, Evelyn filed a quiet motion to freeze the primary asset accounts pending a forensic audit.

We timed the freeze perfectly.

It went into effect at 3:00 PM on Friday.

An hour before Daniel came home to the yellow envelope.

He couldn't move a single dime to offshore accounts. He couldn't pay Vanessa’s brother. He couldn't even pay his own credit card bill for the diamond necklace he had just bought.

He was bleeding out, and he didn't even know he had been cut.
