Chapter 3 - The Illusion of Control

Daniel paced his empty living room, his hands trembling as he stared at the photograph.

Marcus Vale.

How the hell did Claire get a picture of him with Marcus Vale?

He grabbed his phone and dialed Vanessa's number. She answered on the second ring.

“Babe, I love the necklace,” she cooed. “Did you give the boring housewife her excuse for working late yet?”

“Shut up, Vanessa. Just shut up,” Daniel snapped, his heart hammering against his ribs.

“Excuse me?”

“Claire is gone. She took Noah. She emptied the house.”

Vanessa scoffed, clearly unconcerned. “So what? Let her leave. We don't need her. You can finally cut her loose with a tiny alimony check. She doesn't have the brains to fight you.”

“She froze the accounts, Vanessa!” Daniel yelled, pacing faster. “The corporate accounts. The personal accounts. Everything.”

“She can't do that. She's just a stay-at-home mom.”

“She owns half the company!” Daniel screamed, finally realizing the magnitude of his stupidity. “And she found out about Apex Solutions.”

The line went dead quiet.

Vanessa’s arrogant tone vanished instantly. “What do you mean she found out about Apex?”

“She left a picture, Vanessa. Of us. With Marcus Vale at the St. Regis.”

He heard Vanessa gasp.

Marcus Vale was currently under federal investigation for bribing city officials to win construction bids.

Daniel had used Vanessa’s brother’s shell company to funnel kickbacks to Vale in exchange for lucrative city contracts.

It was highly illegal. It was federal prison territory.

And Claire, his quiet, compliant wife who baked cookies for PTA meetings, had unraveled a multi-million-dollar criminal conspiracy while he was busy sleeping with his employee.

“Call your brother,” Daniel ordered, his voice shaking. “Tell him to wipe the servers. Tell him to burn the hard drives. Do it now!”

“Daniel, if she has the photo, what else does she have?” Vanessa whispered, panic finally setting in.

“I don't know,” he admitted, sinking onto the cold hardwood floor of his empty mansion. “But we need to stop her.”

He tried to log into his offshore banking app.

Access Denied.

He tried to transfer funds from the company's reserve account.

Account Frozen.

The illusion of control he had maintained for years was shattering in real-time.

He wasn't the master of his universe anymore.
