Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

Monday morning.

Daniel walked into the headquarters of his construction firm, trying to project absolute authority.

His suit was wrinkled. He hadn't slept in three days. He had spent the weekend frantically calling lawyers, most of whom demanded retainers he could no longer pay.

He had called an emergency board meeting for 9:00 AM.

His plan was to vote out my shares, claim I was mentally unstable, and regain control of the assets before the federal auditors could step in.

Vanessa sat by his side, nervously chewing her expensive manicure.

The other board members—five men who had profited off Daniel’s aggressive tactics for years—looked uneasy.

“Gentlemen,” Daniel began, leaning on the glass table. “My wife has suffered a mental breakdown. She is attempting to hostilely disrupt this company's operations. We need an immediate vote to temporarily suspend her voting rights—”

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Every head turned.

I walked in.

I wasn't wearing yoga pants or oversized sweaters.

I wore a sharp, tailored charcoal suit. My hair was pulled back. I looked exactly like the corporate assassin I used to be.

Flanking me were Evelyn Hart and two large, intimidating men in suits—private security.

“Claire,” Daniel gasped, his face draining of color. “You can't be in here. This is a closed meeting.”

“I own fifty percent of this company, Daniel,” I said smoothly, walking to the empty chair at the opposite end of the table. “And as of this morning, I represent another fifteen percent.”

Daniel blinked. “What?”

I smiled, turning to look at David Chen, one of the oldest board members and a close friend of my late father.

David didn't look at Daniel. He looked at me and nodded slightly.

Over the weekend, I had visited David. I showed him the forensic accounting report. I showed him how Daniel was risking their pensions and their freedom by laundering money to Marcus Vale.

David had immediately signed his proxy voting rights over to me.

“Sixty-five percent,” I announced, placing my briefcase on the table. “I hold a supermajority.”

“You're crazy,” Vanessa spat, standing up. “You're just a jealous, bitter ex-wife trying to ruin him!”

I didn't even look at her. I kept my eyes locked on my husband.

“Motion to terminate Daniel Hayes as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately,” I said clearly.

The room was dead silent.

“You can't do this!” Daniel roared, slamming his fists on the table. “I built this company!”

“With my father's money,” I corrected coldly. “And then you used it to commit federal wire fraud. I have the receipts, Daniel. Every single one.”

I pulled a thick stack of folders from my briefcase and slid them across the long glass table.

One for each board member.

“Inside, you'll find proof of embezzlement, tax evasion, and bribery involving Marcus Vale,” I explained, my voice echoing in the quiet room. “If you back him, you go down with him. The FBI already has a copy.”

The board members opened the folders. Their faces went pale.

Within sixty seconds, it was over.

“Motion to terminate,” David Chen said quietly.

“Seconded,” another board member whispered, terrified.

I looked at Daniel. His eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror.

“Pack your things, Daniel,” I said. “Security will escort you and your mistress out of my building.”
