Chapter 1 - The Homeless Man Who Owned the Room

The room went silent. The clinking of silverware stopped, and the low hum of gossip died instantly.
Daniel stood at the front of the Grand Aurora Hall, the microphone resting easily in his hand. He didn’t look angry. He looked entirely in control.
"Three years ago, I lost everything," Daniel said, his voice echoing in the cavernous room.
My father, Richard Harrison, scoffed loudly from the head table. "We know, son. You’ve been sleeping outside the subway."
A few chuckles rippled through the back of the room. My cheeks burned with humiliation, but Daniel just smiled at my father.
"Yes, Richard," Daniel replied, his tone chillingly polite. "I slept on the streets. But you should ask yourself why a man with my background ended up there."
"Background?" my mother muttered, leaning forward. "He’s delusional."
"My full name is Daniel Arthur Carter," he continued, turning his gaze to the crowd. "Does that name sound familiar to anyone here?"
Silence stretched over the room again, heavier this time. I saw Marcus, my former boss and the man my parents had wanted me to marry, shift uncomfortably in his seat.
"Wait," Marcus said, his voice suddenly tight. "Arthur Carter? The founder of Vanguard Tech?"
"My father," Daniel said simply.
The entire hall collectively gasped. Vanguard Tech was a multi-billion-dollar empire. My heart pounded against my ribs. I stared at the man I had married, realizing I didn't know everything about him.
"That's impossible," Marcus stood up, his face flushed red. "Daniel Carter died in a boating accident three years ago. His brother, Vance, took over the company."
"Vance is a very thorough man," Daniel said, his eyes locking onto Marcus. "He made sure the world thought I was dead. He froze my accounts, stripped my identity, and left me with a choice: disappear, or actually die."
My breath hitched. I remembered the scars on Daniel’s back, the ones he always refused to talk about.
"I chose to disappear," Daniel said softly, looking back at me. "I lived in the shadows. I watched the world move on. And I learned who people truly are when they think you have nothing to offer them."
He reached into the inner pocket of his borrowed suit jacket. He pulled out a sleek, black envelope.
"But I didn't just survive on the streets," Daniel said, his voice hardening. "I rebuilt. I gathered evidence. And as of this morning, Vance Carter is in federal custody."
The crowd erupted into chaotic whispers. My mother’s jaw literally dropped.
"And as for this hall," Daniel said, raising his hand to silence the room. "The Grand Aurora. It's a subsidiary of Vanguard. Which means..."

He looked directly at the venue manager, who was standing frozen by the double doors.
"I own this building," Daniel declared. "And I think it's time we ask a few guests to leave."
