Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest Who Ruined Everything

Daniel pushed the double doors open, shielding me slightly with his body.

The ballroom was in chaos. Guests had backed away from the center of the room, forming a wide, terrified circle. In the middle stood a man in a sharp grey suit, holding a shattered champagne bottle.

It was Vance Carter.

He looked exactly like the corporate headshots I had seen in magazines, only his eyes were wild and desperate.

"Daniel!" Vance screamed, pointing the jagged glass neck at the crowd. "You think you've won? You think a few locked accounts can stop me?"

"You're supposed to be in federal custody, Vance," Daniel said, his voice projecting across the room with lethal calm.

"I paid my way out of holding before they could even process the paperwork," Vance sneered. "You always underestimated my resources, little brother."

My heart hammered in my chest. This wasn't a family dispute. This was a cornered animal.

"It doesn't matter," Daniel stepped forward, moving away from me. "The evidence is already with the SEC and the FBI. It's over."

"It's not over until I say it is," Vance snapped, his eyes darting around the room until they landed on me.

A cruel smile stretched across Vance's face. "So this is the charity case you married? The little project manager who likes to play savior?"

"Keep her out of this," Daniel warned, taking another step forward, his fists clenched at his sides.

"Why?" Vance laughed bitterly. "She's the whole reason you got sloppy! You spent so much time playing house with her that you left a digital footprint. That's how I found out you were still alive last week."

I gasped. The break-in at my apartment three days ago. The police said it was a random robbery, but nothing had been taken. They were looking for Daniel.

"You broke into her home," Daniel's voice was barely a whisper, but it carried a terrifying edge.

"I was looking for the hard drives, Danny," Vance taunted. "And now I'm here to finish the job. If I go down, I'm taking you with me."

May you like

Vance lunged forward, the broken glass aimed directly at Daniel's chest.

Before I could scream, Daniel moved. He didn't flinch. He didn't run. He stepped inside Vance's guard with terrifying speed.
