Chapter 12 - The CEO and His Queen

Three months later.

The boardroom of Vanguard Tech was silent, save for the hum of the city traffic fifty stories below. The massive mahogany table was polished to a mirror shine.

Daniel sat at the head of the table, wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit. I sat directly to his right, reviewing a digital portfolio.

"The acquisition of Apex Holdings is complete," I announced, closing the file. "Their assets have been liquidated to pay off the debts they accrued under Vance's mismanagement."

The board members nodded in approval.

It had been a brutal three months. Confronting my father had been the hardest thing I had ever done. We had found him frantically trying to shred documents with Marcus in his office.

My father hadn't been the mastermind, just a willing pawn who turned a blind eye to illegal funds to keep his country club membership. He avoided jail time by testifying against Marcus and Vance, but his reputation was destroyed. He and my mother had moved to a quiet suburb in Florida, living on a strict allowance Daniel and I provided.

"Thank you, Emily," Daniel said, addressing the room. "As our new Director of Operations, my wife has streamlined our recovery faster than anyone anticipated."

I smiled politely at the board. I hadn't quit my job; I had just upgraded my employer. Taking down a corrupt corporate network turned out to be the ultimate project management challenge.

"With Vance serving twenty years and Marcus facing a decade for corporate espionage, Vanguard is finally secure," Daniel concluded, standing up. "Meeting adjourned."

The board members filed out, offering respectful nods. When the doors finally clicked shut, leaving us alone, Daniel let out a long breath and loosened his tie.

"Director of Operations," he teased, walking over and pulling my chair back. "You're much scarier in a boardroom than you were on a park bench."

"I had a good teacher," I smiled, standing up and wrapping my arms around his neck.

"Are we finally done?" Daniel asked, resting his forehead against mine. "Is the empire secure so I can finally take my wife on a honeymoon?"

"The accounts are clean, the enemies are in jail, and your brother is history," I confirmed, kissing him softly. "I think the CEO deserves a vacation."

"I don't need a vacation," Daniel whispered, holding me tightly against him. "I spent two years in the cold. Everything I could ever want is right here in this room."

He had started as a ghost on the street, and I had started as a woman trying to escape her family's toxic expectations. We had found each other in the lowest moment, building a foundation on truth rather than wealth.

Now, looking out over the city we controlled together, I knew no amount of money could buy what we had forged in the dark.

"Let's go home, Daniel," I said.

He smiled, taking my hand. "Lead the way."
