Chapter 4 - A Dangerous Bargain

The revelation hung in the air, toxic and suffocating.
Dante poured himself a glass of whiskey, downing it in one swift motion.
“Julian. He practically lived at our house on weekends. He was the best man at our wedding.”
“I’m so sorry,” I said quietly.
“Don't be,” Dante replied, his eyes hardening into flint.
“Sorrow is useless. I need leverage. Julian controls the company’s finances. If he and Vanessa take over, they’ll liquidate my life’s work.”
“So go to the police! Tell them what happened!”
“And prove what?” Marcus interrupted, stepping into the room.
“The car is at the bottom of a ravine, smashed to pieces. Proving the brakes were cut before the crash is impossible now.”
Marcus looked grim. “Besides, the mechanic who usually services your private fleet? Found dead this morning. Suicide, supposedly.”
Dante slammed his fist on the desk, rattling the empty glass.
“They're tying off every loose end. The only loose end left is you, Cara.”
I took a step back. “Then hide me. Give me some money and a fake passport. Let me disappear.”
“I will do exactly that,” Dante promised, walking toward me.
“Ten million dollars, a new identity, anywhere in the world you want to go. But first, you help me take them down.”
“How?”
“By being the one thing they don't expect,” Dante said.
“A ghost returning to haunt them.”
“I don't understand.”
“They know a waitress ran after me. But they don't know who you are, or what you look like.”
May you like
Dante smiled, but it was a terrifying expression.
“You're going to get a job at Moretti Global.”
