Chapter 9 - Unraveling the Web

By the time we got back to the safehouse, my sleeve was soaked in blood.
It was a graze, not a deep wound, but it hurt like hell.
Dante was waiting in the driveway.
When he saw the blood, a look of pure, murderous rage crossed his face.
He didn't say a word.
He just picked me up from the van and carried me inside, laying me gently on the sofa in the library.
He barked at Marcus to get the medical kit.
“I’m fine,” I winced, trying to sit up.
“Lie still,” Dante commanded, his hands shaking slightly as he cut away the bloody sleeve of my blazer.
“I told you I wouldn't let them hurt you. I failed.”
“You didn't fail,” I said softly, reaching into my pocket with my good hand.
I pulled out the gold pen.
“I got what we needed.”
While Marcus patched my arm, Dante plugged the pen into his laptop.
The high-resolution photos of the ledger filled the screen.
The silence in the room stretched as Dante read through the numbers.
“It’s worse than I thought,” Dante finally said, rubbing his eyes.
“Julian has been siphoning millions into a shell corporation for three years. The company is completely hollowed out.”
“And Vanessa owns the shell corporation,” Marcus deduced, pointing at the screen.
“Exactly. If the board officially elects her as CEO tomorrow, she and Julian can declare bankruptcy, liquidate the remaining assets, and disappear with billions.”
“We have the proof now,” I said. “Call the police.”
“No,” Dante said, closing the laptop with a definitive snap.
“If we just call the police, their lawyers will drag this out for years in court. They might even flee the country.”

He looked at me, a dangerous fire in his eyes.
“I want them to fall in front of everyone. Tomorrow at the emergency board meeting, they are going to lose everything.”
