Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

The following Monday, Vance called me with the photos. We met at a diner on the outskirts of the city, where he handed me a thick manila envelope. The pictures were damning: Derek and Valerie kissing outside a clinic, Derek carrying groceries into the Bellevue apartment, and the three of them having a family dinner at a high-end restaurant. But there was more. Vance slid a flash drive across the table, revealing that Derek had been expensing the apartment to his firm, claiming it as a corporate lease for visiting clients. He wasn't just stealing from me; he was committing corporate expense fraud.

I drove straight to Lauren’s office. When I showed her the files, she let out a low whistle, calling it a "nuclear bomb." She warned that if we reported this, he would be fired and might face charges, which would change the alimony dynamics. "We need to secure your assets first," she advised. For the next three days, I moved like a shadow. I transferred my entire salary and bonuses into a new offshore account, contacted the credit card companies with fraud affidavits, and froze our joint accounts. I even called the Bellevue leasing office, threatening a police report for the forged signature. The panicked manager warned they would have to issue an eviction notice. "Issue it," I replied coldly.

At home that night, Derek was restless, pacing around the kitchen and checking his phone. “Is something wrong?” I asked, sipping my tea. He muttered that his card had been declined at the gas station and looked genuinely confused. “Really? That’s so strange,” I said innocently. “Maybe the bank flagged it for suspicious activity.” He relaxed, believing my wide, naive smile, and decided it was just a bank error he would fix tomorrow. I took another sip of my tea; it tasted sweeter than usual.
