Chapter 7 - The House of Cards

The collapse was faster than I ever imagined. Without my corporate salary and the stolen credit lines, their perfect life imploded within days. The morning after the dinner, Derek was escorted out of his firm by security and arrested for financial fraud and identity theft. When Lauren called to tell me, I felt a brief twinge in my chest, but it vanished instantly. With no money to fight the divorce, his public defender advised him to sign everything over to me in exchange for leniency on the civil forgery charges. Valerie, locked out of her apartment, was forced to move back into a cramped house with our mother, who now resented her for bringing shame and poverty to their doorstep.

A few days later, Valerie left a sobbing voicemail. With Derek in jail and no money for formula, she begged me to help the baby. I thought about the blue blanket I had bought with so much love, but then I remembered their laughter in the hospital hallway. I deleted the voicemail and blocked her number. When my mother tried to visit my office, security stopped her, so she sent a letter full of excuses about trying to hold the family together. I tore it into pieces; you don’t hold a family together by breaking one of its members.

The divorce was finalized in record time, leaving me with the house, my accounts, and everything I had worked for. Derek was left with a criminal record, crushing debt, and a child he couldn't afford. They had built their house on my money, and when I pulled out the foundation, the roof caved in. I didn’t stay in Seattle with its ghosts. I sold the house, packed my bags, and accepted a transfer to my company’s branch in Chicago for a clean slate.
