Chapter 8 - The Rebirth

One year later, the biting cold wind off Lake Michigan made me feel awake and alive. I was sitting in a warm cafe in downtown Chicago, watching the snow fall. Wearing a thick cashmere coat and a silver watch, I reflected on my new life. I had been promoted to Regional Director six months ago, my career was thriving, and most importantly, my mind was quiet. The nightmares of hospital hallways and whispered betrayals had finally faded into the past.
My phone buzzed on the table. It was Lauren, checking in on me in the Windy City. After a bit of small talk, she hesitated before telling me she had seen Derek. He was working at a car rental place near the airport and looked exhausted and aged. She told me that Valerie had left him a few months prior, moving to Texas with a wealthier man and leaving the baby behind with our mother. I looked out the window at the pure, white snow piling up on the sidewalk. “That’s unfortunate for the baby,” I said quietly.
“Do you feel anything about it?” Lauren asked gently. I searched my heart, waiting for anger, sadness, or vindication, but there was nothing. There was only a hollow space where they used to live, now completely filled with my own peace. “No,” I replied. “I don’t feel anything at all.” We said our goodbyes, and I walked out into the winter street. I had spent six years trying to give them everything, and one month taking it all away. But the rest of my life? That belonged entirely to me. I pulled my collar up against the wind, stepped into the bustling crowd, and disappeared into the future.
