Chapter 1 - THE PEARL BUTTON REBELLION

The silk of Vanessa’s gown rustled against the marble floor with a sickening familiarity. She stood at the head of the aisle, her hands cradling a nonexistent bump beneath the exact replica of my grandmother's pearl buttons.

Two hundred guests held their collective breath, waiting for my tears. Adrian, my fiancé of three years, stared at his polished shoes as if they held the secrets of the universe.

“Don’t make this ugly, Evelyn,” Vanessa purred, tilting her chin up. “Adrian loves me. The baby deserves a father.”

I looked from my sister to my mother in the front row. Mom’s gaze darted away instantly, her fingers nervously pleating the fabric of her expensive dress. She knew. She had known the whole time, helping orchestrate this public humiliation under the guise of family peace.

Adrian finally found his voice, though it lacked any real conviction. “Evelyn, I was going to tell you.”

“Before or after the honeymoon?” I asked, my voice cutting through the suffocating silence of the cathedral.

He flinched, opening his mouth to speak, but Vanessa cut him off with a smug little laugh. “You always were so cold, Evie. That is why he chose me. You have your father’s ledgers, but no warmth.”

That sentence unlocked something cold and sharp deep inside my chest. Thirty-two years of being measured against Vanessa’s effortless charm, thirty-two years of swallowing insults disguised as sisterly advice, crystallized into absolute clarity.

I laughed. It was a short, dry sound that made Vanessa blink in confusion.

Instead of turning to face my cheating fiancé or my complicit mother, I pivoted on my heel. Standing directly behind us, holding the embossed leather officiant’s ledger, was Nathaniel Cross.

Nathaniel was a man who commanded entire industries with a single phone call, the billionaire titan behind Cross Atlantic Holdings and my late father’s most trusted protégé. He had agreed to officiate this ceremony out of respect for my father, standing like a dark monolith in a tailored charcoal suit.

He raised one dark eyebrow, his gray eyes piercing straight through my composure.

I offered him a thin, razor-sharp smile. “Fine. Then let’s get married instead.”

Gasps erupted from the pews. Vanessa’s jaw unhinged, her pristine makeup suddenly looking like a mask of absolute terror.

Adrian laughed nervously, his face flushing red. “Evelyn, have you lost your mind? Stop playing games.”

Nathaniel did not laugh. He slowly closed the officiant’s book, the heavy leather thud echoing in the cavernous church.

“Evelyn,” Nathaniel’s deep voice carried effortlessly across the room, steady and completely devoid of panic. “Are you asking because you are hurt, or because you mean it?”

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bones.

I met his intense gaze, refusing to blink. “For years, you told me never to make a permanent decision in temporary pain.”

A subtle softening touched the corners of his mouth. “I did.”

“So no,” I continued, raising my voice so every single guest could hear every syllable. “I’m not asking you to marry me today.”

Vanessa let out a sharp breath of relief, her smirk slowly returning.

I turned back to face my sister, watching the color drain from her face all over again. “I’m asking if you’ll stand beside me while I cancel this circus, expose two thieves, and take back what they thought I was too stupid to protect.”

Nathaniel didn’t hesitate for a single second. “Gladly.”
