Chapter 7 - THE UNEXPECTED ALLY

Three days after Adrian’s financial collapse, the dust had begun to settle, though my phone still buzzed periodically with desperate messages from distant relatives pleading for mercy on behalf of my mother and sister. I ignored them all, spending my hours in my father’s old corner office, meticulously rebuilding the corporate structure that had been nearly torn apart.

The heavy mahogany door clicked open, and my personal assistant stepped inside, looking slightly flustered.

“Evelyn, there’s someone here to see you,” she said hesitantly. “He says it’s urgent, and he claims he has information regarding your mother’s hidden assets.”

I looked up from my laptop, narrowing my eyes. “Who is it?”

Before the assistant could answer, a heavy-set, middle-aged man pushed past her into the office. It was Uncle Arthur, looking visibly aged, his expensive silk tie slightly crooked and his forehead beaded with nervous sweat.

“Evelyn, thank God you’re alone,” Arthur breathed heavily, leaning against the doorframe to catch his breath. “You have to listen to me. I was played just like you were.”

I didn’t offer him a seat. I simply crossed my arms and stared at him coldly. “You were trying to buy my family home for pennies on the dollar, Uncle Arthur. That doesn’t sound like an innocent bystander.”

Arthur winced, holding up his hands defensively. “Your mother lied to me! She told me you were willingly liquidating the estate to pay off family debts! She said you agreed to it!”

“And you believed her without checking with me once?” I asked, my voice dripping with skepticism.

“She showed me a forged document bearing your signature!” Arthur blurted out, reaching into his briefcase and pulling out a thick manila folder. “Look! Here it is! This is the proof that your mother orchestrated the entire corporate transfer behind your back.”

I motioned for him to place the folder on the desk. I opened it slowly, scanning the pages of forensic accounting data and email transcripts between my mother and Arthur. It was damning evidence—not just against my mother, but it completely cleared Arthur of direct conspiracy, reducing his role to a useful idiot manipulated by maternal deceit.

“Why bring this to me now?” I asked, looking up from the papers. “If the authorities find this, you might still face investigation for aiding financial fraud.”

“Because I know Nathaniel Cross,” Arthur swallowed hard, his voice trembling slightly. “And I know that if I don’t cooperate with you voluntarily, Nathaniel will strip me of every single penny I own before the week is out. I want immunity, Evelyn. In exchange for every single digital communication your mother sent me.”

I stared at my uncle for a long moment, weighing the value of his betrayal against my need for total closure.

“If you want my protection from Nathaniel’s legal team,” I said slowly, “you’re going to sign a full public confession admitting to your role in the attempted property acquisition, and hand over every recording you have of my mother.”

Arthur hesitated for barely a second before grabbing a pen from my desk. “Done. Just keep Nathaniel away from my bank accounts.”
