Chapter 12 - A Father’s Farewell

Julian Vance stood outside the front gate of the upstate farm.

It was late October, and the trees had turned brilliant shades of amber and gold.

Julian was thinner now, dressed in plain clothes without his customary designer label.

Ricardo walked down the gravel driveway, stopping on the other side of the wooden gate.

"She doesn't want to see you yet, Julian," Ricardo said quietly.

Julian nodded slowly, looking down at his worn boots.

"I know," Julian said, his voice hoarse. "I didn't come to force her."

"Then why are you here?"

Julian reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a manila envelope.

"I signed over all parental claims to you, Ricardo."

Ricardo looked at the envelope, surprised.

"Julian, you didn't have to surrender your rights completely."

"Yes, I did," Julian said, his eyes welling with tears.

"I failed Clara because I was too weak to stand up to Helena's influence."

"I ignored Clara's complaints about being sick because Helena told me it was postpartum depression."

"I was blind, selfish, and cowardly."

Julian placed the envelope on top of the wooden post between them.

"Bia deserves a protector, not an excuse for a father."

"I'm leaving the country next week. A medical charity in South America needs logistics coordinators."

"I need to build something clean with my hands. Far away from this family's money."

Ricardo picked up the envelope, examining the signature stamps.

He looked up at Julian, seeing the broken honesty in his brother-in-law's eyes.

"I won't teach her to hate you, Julian," Ricardo said honestly.

"When she asks, I’ll tell her you made mistakes, but you chose what was best for her in the end."

Julian let out a ragged sob, nodded once in gratitude, and turned away.

He walked down the long country road toward the waiting taxi, never looking back.
