Chapter 15 - Beneath the White Lilies

Late that afternoon, the birthday party guests headed home.

The sun dipped low, casting long purple and gold shadows across the meadow.

Ricardo and Bia drove into town, stopping at the peaceful cemetery on the hillside.

Clara’s resting place sat beneath a weeping willow tree, overlooking the river valley.

The headstone was made of pale grey granite, engraved with gold letters:

CLARA VANCE — BELOVED MOTHER, DEFENDER OF TRUTH, ETERNAL LIGHT.

Bia walked up to the stone, holding a small bouquet of wildflowers she had picked herself.

Not expensive, store-bought memorial lilies like the ones Helena had ordered.

Just simple, vibrant yellow buttercups and purple clover.

She laid the flowers gently at the base of the granite monument.

Beside the flowers, Bia placed the cloth doll, Penny.

The red stitches across the doll’s belly were neat, strong, and enduring.

"Hi, Mommy," Bia whispered softly, touching the cold stone with her small palm.

"Uncle Ricardo took care of everything, just like you asked."

"We fixed Penny."

"And the company is helping all the people you wanted to help."

Ricardo walked up behind her, placing his hand gently on Bia’s shoulder.

A gentle summer breeze blew through the weeping willow leaves.

It felt like a warm, comforting embrace surrounding them both.

There were no more locked doors.

No more whispers in the dark.

No more bitter secrets hidden inside innocent toys.

Clara Vance was finally resting in peace.

And her daughter was walking forward into the light, whole, protected, and free.
