Chapter 4 - The Breaking Point

The tipping point arrived over dessert. Robert had started pressuring Nathan about defense supply contracts, his voice growing louder, more desperate. He kept talking about "synergy" and "family connections," his eyes scanning Nathan for a sign of weakness.
“Look, Nathan,” Robert said, leaning forward. “With the family connections we’re building, we could be looking at a serious shift in our quarterly revenue. It’s about being in the right circles. That’s why we’re so glad you’re joining us. Caroline has always had a knack for bringing in the right people.”
Caroline smiled, a thin, rehearsed expression. “I just want the family to be secure, Nathan. It’s not fair that Evelyn gets to hide behind her ‘secret job’ while we struggle to make these massive deals work. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if she’s even in the Navy at all.”
Nathan finally moved. He stood up, the chair scraping sharply against the wooden floor, silencing the room. He didn't look at Robert or Caroline. He looked directly at Evelyn. He seemed to be analyzing her, his gaze shifting from her face to the small, inconspicuous service pin she wore on her lapel—a pin that signified a level of clearance most people only read about in thrillers.
“Nice to meet you, ma’am,” he said, his voice suddenly thick with respect.
The shift in his demeanor was violent, a sudden snap of tension. He stepped back, his hand coming up in a crisp, perfect salute that cut through the room like a blade.

“Admiral, ma’am.”
The room died. The air left it. Every bit of oxygen seemed to be sucked out by the sound of that title.
