Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

The aftermath of the revelation was a slow-motion car crash. Caroline, usually so composed, was spiraling. Her face had drained of all color, and her hands were shaking as she gripped the tablecloth.

“Nathan, stop it!” she shrieked. “This is a joke, right? You’re playing a game. She’s just my sister. She lives in a small apartment and never has any money to spend on anything.”

“She lives in government-provided housing because it’s secure,” Nathan said, his voice dripping with disdain as he finally turned his gaze toward Caroline. “She doesn't have ‘spending money’ because she is a public servant, not a trophy wife.”

He reached into his jacket, his movements methodical. He pulled out his phone and tapped the screen. “I have been meaning to mention this, Admiral. Before tonight, Caroline pulled me aside. She didn't want to talk about the wedding. She wanted to know if my ‘position’ could help her father secure a defense supply contract.”

The room became a courtroom, and Evelyn was the presiding judge. She watched as the faces of her family morphed from arrogance to abject terror.

“She told me,” Nathan continued, “that your family finally needed someone ‘useful’ in uniform. She said she was tired of you being a ‘waste of a uniform.’”

Robert turned to his daughter, his face purple with rage and humiliation. “You did what?”
