Chapter 5 - Reality Realigned

The silence was absolute. Robert’s glass slipped from his hand, the crystal shattering on the floor, the sound like a gunshot in the vacuum of the room. Caroline’s mouth hung open, her eyes darting from Nathan to her sister. She looked as if she had just watched a stranger transform into a monster.
“What… what did you just call her?” Robert whispered, his voice trembling.
Nathan did not lower his hand. His eyes were locked on Evelyn, his expression one of reverence. “Rear Admiral Evelyn Hart,” he stated, his voice steady and cold. “She chaired my promotion review last year. She is the one who approved the funding for my unit’s entire operation.”

“That’s impossible,” Robert muttered, shaking his head. “She works in… in administrative services. Data entry. She said—”

Evelyn looked at her father. “I told you for fifteen years. You just chose to hear what you wanted to hear.”
