Chapter 10 - A New Empire

Six months later, the shadows of the Mafia world felt like a distant nightmare. Damiano had solidified his power, but he had changed the rules. He moved his operations towards legitimate businesses—real estate, shipping, construction. He wanted a clean legacy. He wanted a family.

It was a bright Sunday morning. We were in the backyard of the estate. The high walls and armed guards were still there, but they didn't feel like a cage anymore. They felt like a fortress built to keep the monsters out. Emma was running across the manicured lawn, chasing Damiano’s massive German Shepherd, laughing hysterically.

Damiano stood beside me on the patio, watching her with a softness in his eyes that was reserved only for us. He reached into his pocket and pulled out Mr. Barnaby, the rag doll, handing it to me. “I believe I promised to return this.” I smiled, taking the doll. “You kept him all this time?” “He’s good luck,” Damiano smirked. Then, his expression turned serious. He reached into his other pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

My breath hitched. He didn't kneel—kings don't kneel—but he looked at me with an intense, burning devotion. “Six months ago, I claimed you to save your life,” he said softly, his thumb brushing my cheek. “Today, I’m asking you to let me claim you because you saved mine. You and Emma brought light into a life I thought was destined for darkness.” He opened the box. A massive, flawless diamond caught the sunlight. “Marry me, Sophia. For real this time. Let me be the husband you deserve, and the father Emma needs.”

Tears blurred my vision as I looked at the man who had terrified me, protected me, and finally, loved me. “Yes,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. Damiano spun me around, a genuine, booming laugh escaping his chest. Emma ran up to us, tugging on his pant leg. “Are you my new daddy now?” Damiano knelt down, picking her up and holding her close to his heart. “If you'll have me, little one. Forever.”

The blinking red light had threatened to destroy our world. Instead, it guided us out of the dark, right into each other's arms.

THE END.
