Chapter 7 - Blood and Betrayal

Time slowed down. I closed my eyes, bracing for the impact, praying my body would block the bullet from hitting Emma. BANG. The gunshot was deafening in the small room. But I didn't feel any pain.

I opened my eyes. Isabella’s gun clattered to the floor. She screamed, clutching her bleeding wrist. Behind her, Marco dropped to his knees, a bullet hole in the center of his forehead. Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain and looking like the devil himself, was Damiano. He was breathing heavily, his gun smoking in his hand.

“Damiano...” Isabella gasped, backing away. “You thought you could buy my lieutenant?” Damiano’s voice was a low growl that vibrated through the floorboards. “I knew Marco was turning for weeks. I fed him the fake schedules. I let him bring you right into my trap.”

The lights suddenly flickered back on. Dozens of Damiano’s loyal men flooded the hallway, surrounding Isabella and her small team of infiltrators. She was trapped. Damiano walked past her without a second glance. He rushed to me, dropping his gun and pulling both me and Emma into a crushing embrace. “Are you hurt? Did they touch you?” he demanded, his hands frantically checking us for injuries. “We’re okay,” I sobbed, burying my face in his chest. “You came back.” “I will always come back for you,” he vowed, kissing the top of my head.

He turned back to Isabella. The softness in his eyes vanished, replaced by pure ice. “Take her to the basement,” Damiano ordered his men. “And send a message to Don Carlo. Tell him I have his daughter. If he wants her breathing, he comes to New York alone.” Isabella screamed curses as she was dragged away, but her threats were empty now. The shiny lady had finally lost her shine.
