Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Three weeks passed. The estate became our entire world. While the city outside held its breath for the Mafia war to erupt, inside the mansion, a strange peace had settled. Emma thrived. She had the entire staff wrapped around her little finger, and surprisingly, Damiano made time for her every evening. They would sit in the library, a terrifying mob boss reading fairy tales to a little girl with a rag doll.
But the danger was always lingering. One evening, after putting Emma to bed, I walked down to the kitchen for a glass of water. The house was silent, save for the low murmur of voices coming from Damiano’s study. The door was slightly ajar. I knew I shouldn't eavesdrop, but Isabella’s name caught my ear.
“They’re moving through the docks, Boss,” a gruff voice was saying. “Carlo is rallying the Chicago men. They want the girl. They think if they eliminate Sophia and the kid, they can claim you made up the bomb story to humiliate Isabella.” “Let them try,” Damiano’s voice was cold steel. “Double the guards on the east wing. No one gets near Sophia. If Isabella steps foot in New York, bring me her head.”
I gasped softly, bumping against a wooden side table. The vase on it rattled. The voices in the study stopped instantly. The door swung open, and Damiano stood there, a gun already drawn and pointed at the floor. When he saw it was me, he sighed, running a hand through his hair. He nodded to his underboss, who silently slipped away.

“You shouldn't be wandering in the dark, Sophia,” he said, stepping out into the hallway. “They’re coming for us, aren't they?” I asked, my voice trembling. He closed the distance between us. “I have it handled.” “Don't lie to me, Damiano! She wants my daughter dead!” I slammed my hands against his chest, tears of frustration spilling over. “I can't live like this! Waiting for the bullet to come!”
Instead of pushing me away, Damiano dropped his hands to my waist and pulled me flush against him. “Breathe, Sophia,” he ordered, his voice thick with an emotion I couldn't place. “Look at me.” I looked up, my chest heaving against his. “I am not going to let you die,” he whispered fiercely. “You are mine to protect now. Both of you.” The air between us suddenly shifted. The fear morphed into something electric, something dangerous. His gaze dropped to my lips. Slowly, as if giving me time to pull away, he leaned down. When his lips met mine, it wasn't a gentle kiss. It was desperate, consuming, a promise sealed in fire. And God help me, I kissed him back.
