Chapter 1 - THE FROZEN NURSERY

The biting wind of December pressed against the thin glass panes of the rundown apartment, but the chill inside the rooms was far more bitter than the weather outside. Maya sat on the edge of a sagging mattress, shivering in an oversized sweater that hung loosely from her frail frame. Her hands trembled as she clutched a warm bottle of milk, trying desperately to feed newborn Liam, who whimpered softly in his wooden crib. Just three weeks ago, Maya had undergone an emergency C-section, a grueling medical ordeal that left her with a deep, angry incision across her lower abdomen. The surgical wound throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, partially because she had not been able to afford the prescribed antibiotics or proper post-operative care. Her face was paper-white, her lips chapped, and her dark, sunken eyes carried the heavy weight of exhaustion and profound betrayal. Every breath she took felt like inhaling ice shards, yet the thermostat on the wall remained completely dead, its batteries removed to save money.
The heavy front door clicked open, and the sound of muffled laughter echoed through the narrow hallway, followed by the clatter of expensive shopping bags dropping onto the linoleum floor. Mark walked into the kitchen, shedding a high-end designer winter coat that cost more than Maya’s grocery budget for an entire year. His hair was neatly styled, his cheeks flushed with the warmth of a recent vacation in Miami, and his eyes avoided Maya entirely as he tossed a handful of mail onto the counter.
"You're back early," Maya whispered, her voice cracking from dehydration as she adjusted the blanket around Liam.
"Don't start with the dramatic sighs, Maya," Mark snapped, pulling a cold can of soda from the refrigerator and popping the tab with an aggressive hiss. "I have a splitting headache from the flight, and the last thing I need is your whining about the heating bill again. You knew what kind of financial situation we were in when we decided to have this baby."
"The situation changed when my mother sent fourteen thousand dollars specifically for my recovery and the baby's needs," Maya replied, her voice shaking with a mixture of fear and suppressed fury. "Mark, where did that money go? There is no food in the pantry, the electricity is about to be cut off, and I had to wipe away my own tears after changing my bandages because I couldn't even afford proper gauze."
Mark slammed the soda can onto the counter, liquid splashing across the stained surface as he turned to face her with a sneer. "Your mother’s money isn't a bottomless pit, Maya. Chloe and I had business expenses to cover, and networking trips aren't cheap. Besides, you're sitting around the house all day doing nothing while I'm out there working myself to the bone trying to keep a roof over your ungrateful head."
"Chloe?" Maya’s breath hitched, the name cutting through her chest like a knife. "You took my mother's money—money meant for my postpartum surgery and our son—to fund a vacation with your mistress?"
May you like
"Keep your voice down," Mark hissed, stepping forward and pointing a threatening finger right in her face. "Chloe understands my ambitions. She doesn't drag me down with pathetic, needy tears every single day like you do. If you don't like how things are run here, you can pack your bags and leave—just remember you won't take a single dime of mine with you."
Mark grabbed his coat, slammed the front door behind him, and left Maya alone in the freezing silence with a crying infant and a bleeding wound.
