Chapter 3 - THE HOSPITAL AND THE EVIDENCE

The sterile white lights of the emergency department buzzed softly overhead as Dr. Evelyn Vance—not Elena the investigator, but Elena the desperate mother—hovered anxiously beside the examination bed where Maya lay resting. The chief of emergency medicine, an old colleague of Elena’s from her days handling high-profile public safety cases, stepped out from behind the curtain and pulled Elena into the quiet hallway.
"Her surgical wound is severely infected, Elena," the doctor said, his expression grim as he held up a clipboard. "She has an active bacterial infection caused by lack of proper hygiene, severe malnutrition, and extreme physical exhaustion. If you had waited another forty-eight hours to bring her in, she could have suffered septic shock. And the baby—little Liam is suffering from mild hypothermia and failure to thrive because he wasn't getting adequate nutrition."
Elena closed her eyes for a single second, letting the sheer fury wash through her veins before sealing it away behind a wall of cold, analytical precision. "Can you stabilize them both and provide a full medical report documenting the exact cause of her condition?"
"Already on it," the doctor nodded. "Hospital protocol requires us to document signs of severe neglect, especially in post-operative patients. I'll have the full medical dossier ready for you by morning."
"Thank you, Thomas," Elena replied, giving his shoulder a firm, grateful squeeze before turning back toward Maya’s room.
Maya was asleep, her breathing finally rhythmic and peaceful under the influence of intravenous fluids and heavy antibiotics, while little Liam slept soundly in a warm hospital bassinet nearby. Elena pulled out her encrypted smartphone and dialed a secure number connecting to a private digital forensic technician she had trusted for over a decade.
"Marcus, I need you to run a full financial trace on three specific routing numbers," Elena said quietly, keeping her eyes fixed on her sleeping daughter through the glass partition. "I want every transaction, every offshore transfer, and every shared account linked to a man named Mark Vance and a woman named Chloe Sterling over the last eight months."
"You got it, Chief," Marcus’s voice crackled over the secure line. "Is this a standard asset recovery job?"
"No," Elena replied, a dangerous edge creeping into her voice. "This is a demolition job. Find every digital footprint they left behind, including hotel reservations, text logs, and shared property purchases. I want a complete dossier on my desk within twenty-four hours."
Elena hung up the phone, slipped her hands into her coat pockets, and walked out into the crisp night air toward her car. She drove back to the cold, abandoned apartment with a single purpose: to secure the physical and digital evidence before Mark or his accomplices realized what was happening.
Using her own master locksmith tools that she kept in her trunk, Elena bypassed the front door lock in under ten seconds without leaving a single scratch. Inside, the apartment was pitch black. She switched on a pair of specialized night-vision tactical glasses and began scouring the premises room by room.
On the kitchen table, she found an old tablet left plugged into the wall. She powered it on and immediately noticed that the cloud-synced security system app was still active, broadcasting live feeds from the hidden cameras she had insisted on installing when Maya first moved in with Mark.
Elena sat down at the sticky wooden table, plugged her high-speed data cable into the tablet, and began downloading months of high-definition video footage, audio recordings, and text archives directly to her encrypted secure drive.
The first video file popped up on the screen, dated just four days after Maya’s major surgery. Mark walked into the kitchen with Chloe, laughing loudly while counting thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills that Elena had wired for Maya’s postpartum nurse.
"She’s such a gullible idiot," Chloe’s voice rang clearly through the tablet speakers, filled with malicious amusement. "She actually thinks her mother’s money is running out because of medical bills. We booked the penthouse in Miami for a whole week using her allowance."

"Just keep your voice down," Mark chuckled, wrapping his arm around Chloe’s waist. "If Maya’s mother ever finds out about this, she’ll rain down hell on us. But the old woman lives three hours away and never visits. Maya is completely isolated. She has no one to protect her."
Elena watched the screen in absolute silence, her face expressionless, her heart beating with the cold, measured rhythm of a predator closing in on its prey. They thought Maya was alone. They forgot that a mother's vigilance never sleeps.
