Chapter 10 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The holding facility visiting room was cold, sterile, and smelling faintly of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. Mark sat on the metal stool behind the reinforced glass partition, wearing a bright orange jumpsuit that swallowed his frame, his hair unwashed and his eyes hollow and bloodshot. He had spent the last two weeks in isolation, watching his professional career disintegrate, his assets vanish, and his life's ambitions turn to ash.
When the heavy steel door clicked open and Elena Vance walked into the visiting booth on the other side of the glass, Mark flinched, instinctively pulling back as if he had seen a ghost.
He picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with a trembling hand, lifting it to his ear. Elena picked up her receiver slowly, her expression completely calm, her eyes sharp and piercing through the smudged glass.
"Elena... please," Mark’s voice cracked over the speaker, desperate and pleading. "You have to help me. My lawyer says the prosecutor is pushing for the maximum sentence—eight to ten years without parole. I'll lose everything. I'll spend the best years of my life in a federal penitentiary."
"You already lost everything, Mark," Elena replied evenly, her voice entirely devoid of anger or satisfaction, carrying only the weight of absolute truth. "You lost your freedom, your career, your reputation, and your family the moment you decided to steal from your own newborn child and leave my daughter to suffer in that freezing apartment."
"I made a mistake!" Mark sobbed, tears spilling down his cheeks as he pressed his forehead against the glass partition. "Chloe manipulated me! It was her idea to take the trips! I never meant for Maya to get sick!"
"Don't blame Chloe for choices you made every single day with full awareness of what you were doing," Elena interrupted sharply, her tone cutting through his excuses like a scalpel. "You chose to drain the accounts. You chose to cut off the heat. You chose to lie to investigators, forge financial documents, and hire a corrupt caregiver to keep my daughter isolated and helpless."
Mark stared at her through the glass, the last vestige of his arrogant pride completely shattered, replaced by the bitter realization that his manipulation had finally met an immovable wall. "Is Maya... is Maya ever going to forgive me?"
"No," Elena answered instantly, without a moment of hesitation. "Maya is filing for a complete divorce, taking back her maiden name, and securing sole custody of Liam. You will never be part of their lives again. When you walk out of prison ten years from now, you will be entirely alone—exactly where your actions deserve to leave you."
Mark lowered the telephone receiver slowly from his ear, his hand dropping to his lap as a choked, desperate sob escaped his lips. He sat staring blankly at the metal table, completely crushed under the weight of his own calculated deceit.

Elena hung up her receiver with a quiet, solid click. She stood up, straightened her coat, and turned away from the glass partition without looking back.
As she walked out of the holding facility and stepped out into the warm afternoon sunshine, she took a deep breath of the fresh air. The final chapter of the nightmare was closed. The trap she had set had sprung perfectly, and justice had been served in full.
