Chapter 2 - Architects of Ruin

Alexander didn't yell. He didn't break things. That wasn't his style.

He was a man who built empires and crushed competitors with quiet, surgical precision. Our marriage had ended because of his obsession with control and his dark, uncompromising nature, but tonight, those exact traits were exactly what we needed.

He pulled a burner phone from his coat pocket and dialed a number.

"Dr. Vance. I need you at my ex-wife's apartment immediately. Bring the trauma kit. And bring the forensic photography equipment."

He hung up without waiting for a reply.

"We aren't going to a hospital," Alexander said, turning his piercing gaze to me. "Carmen controls the board at Dallas General. She’d have the records scrubbed and the police report buried before sunrise. We do this my way."

Sofia whimpered as she tried to shift her weight. "Dad... Javier said they'd ruin us if we went to the cops. He knows judges. He knows politicians."

A terrifying, humorless smile touched the corners of Alexander's mouth.

"Sweetheart," he said softly, smoothing back her matted hair. "Javier plays with local politicians. I own the people who fund them. By the time I am finished, that boy won't be able to practice law in a back alley."

Within twenty minutes, a discreet black town car idled outside. Dr. Vance, a grim-faced physician who clearly owed Alexander his life or his career, stepped in.

For the next hour, my living room turned into a clinical, undeniable crime scene.

Every bruise, every laceration, every torn thread of that beautiful dress was photographed, cataloged, and documented with chilling efficiency.

"Multiple contusions. Suspected hairline fracture on the orbital bone. Defensive wounds on the forearms," Dr. Vance muttered into a dictaphone.

I sat in the corner, my hands clenched so tightly my nails dug half-moons into my palms.

Alexander walked over and handed me a glass of scotch.

"Drink," he ordered. "You need your nerves steady. Tomorrow, we go to war."

"What's the plan?" I asked, the liquor burning a hot trail down my throat.

"First, we secure the asset," he replied, pulling out his laptop. "They want the condo? I'm transferring the deed into a blind trust based in the Cayman Islands under my corporate umbrella by 8:00 AM. Even God won't be able to untangle that paperwork."

He typed furiously, his eyes reflecting the harsh blue light of the screen.

"Second, we let them think they won. We let them think Sofia ran away in shame. Arrogance makes people careless."

At 6:00 AM, my phone buzzed on the coffee table.

The caller ID flashed: Javier.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked at Alexander.

He nodded, pointing a finger at me. "Put him on speaker. Be the terrified, hysterical mother. Give him exactly what he expects."

I took a breath, channeled every ounce of fear I had felt hours ago, and answered.

"Hello?" I made my voice tremble.

"Elena," Javier's voice was smooth, patronizing, dripping with fake concern. "Is Sofia with you? She had a bit too much to drink last night and stumbled out of the hotel. We've been so worried."

I let out a fabricated sob. "She's here, Javier. She's badly hurt. What did you people do to her?!"

He sighed, a heavy, theatrical sound. "Elena, please calm down. She slipped in the bathroom. It’s embarrassing, really. Tell her to come back to the hotel. We have brunch at noon. We can bring the notary for the property transfer so we can finally put this silly business behind us."

He was so confident. So utterly convinced of his own invincibility.

"I... I don't know..." I stammered, looking at Alexander, who was grinning like a wolf smelling blood.

"Don't make this difficult, Elena," Javier's voice dropped, the velvet wearing thin to reveal the steel underneath. "You know how things work in this town. It would be a shame if your little catering business suddenly failed health inspections. Have Sofia here by noon."

He hung up.

Alexander closed his laptop with a sharp snap.

"Perfect," Alexander whispered. "He just dug his own grave. Now, it's time to push him in."
