Chapter 5 - The Viper's Nest

The silence in the room was so absolute it felt heavy.
Javier’s jaw practically hit the floor. He recognized Alexander immediately. Anyone in the Texas corporate world knew Alexander Vance. He was a myth, a ghost, a billionaire who devoured companies and destroyed lives from behind closed doors.
"Mr... Mr. Vance?" Javier stammered, all his bravado instantly evaporating, replaced by a pathetic, trembling fear.
"Hello, Javier," Alexander said smoothly, walking slowly toward them. His footsteps sounded like a judge's gavel on the hardwood floor. "I hear you've been having a tough afternoon."
Carmen, foolishly, didn't understand the danger.
"Who the hell is this?" she snapped, trying to regain her dominant posture. "This is a private family matter! Get out of this apartment!"
Alexander stopped a few feet from her. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to.
"I am Alexander Vance. I am the man who owns the bank that is currently foreclosing on your heavily mortgaged home, Carmen. I am the man who bought the debt of your failing shell companies. And, most importantly..."
He stepped closer, towering over her, his eyes burning with a terrifying, contained fury.
"...I am the father of the girl you locked in a hotel room and beat like a dog."
Carmen’s face drained of all color. The realization hit her physically; she staggered back a step, bumping into her terrified son.
"It... it was a misunderstanding," Javier whimpered, literally hiding behind his mother. "We were just... we were just trying to teach her about respect. It's our culture!"
Before I could even blink, Alexander moved.
He grabbed Javier by the throat, hoisting the grown man off the floor and slamming him brutally against the wall. The drywall cracked under the impact.
Javier gasped, his legs kicking frantically, his face turning a deep shade of purple.
"Alexander, no!" I shouted, standing up. Not because I cared about Javier, but because I didn't want my ex-husband going to prison for murder.
Carmen screamed, dropping her designer purse. "Let him go! Let him go, you're killing him!"
Alexander held Javier pinned for ten agonizing seconds, letting the boy feel absolute, helpless terror. Letting him feel exactly what Sofia had felt.
Then, he dropped him.
Javier crumpled to the floor, coughing and dry-heaving, gasping for air like a dying fish.
"You like hitting women, Javier?" Alexander whispered, leaning down. "You like standing in hallways while six women beat a girl who weighs a hundred pounds? Stand up. Let's see how you do against me."
Javier scrambled backward, crying, actual tears of terror streaming down his face. "Please... please, I'm sorry. It was her idea! It was my mother's idea!"
He pointed a shaking finger at Carmen. "She made me do it! She needed the money! I didn't want to hurt Sofia!"
Carmen stared at her son, betrayed and horrified. The perfect facade of their powerful family had completely shattered into pathetic, self-serving pieces.
Alexander stood up, dusting off his pristine suit jacket, looking at them both with utter disgust.
"The police are waiting downstairs," Alexander said coldly. "Along with a team of forensic auditors."
Carmen gasped, clutching her chest. "You can't do this. We are the Robles family!"
"Not anymore," Sofia spoke up. Her voice was strong, echoing through the room.
She stood up with her cane, walking toward them. She didn't look broken anymore. She looked like her father's daughter.
"You wanted my condo, Carmen?" Sofia asked, pulling a folded legal document from her pocket. "It's gone. It's in a blind trust. You get nothing. You have nothing. You are nothing."

Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway again, and this time, three Dallas police officers stepped through the doorway.
"Carmen Robles and Javier Robles?" the lead detective asked, holding up a pair of handcuffs. "You're both under arrest for aggravated assault, kidnapping, and corporate embezzlement."
