Chapter 4 - Bleeding the Beast

By 3:00 PM, the Robles' perfectly curated world was burning to the ground, and they didn't even know who had struck the match.
Javier had fled the country club, leaving his mother humiliated in front of Dallas high society.
But Carmen’s humiliation was only just beginning.
She marched up to the club's front desk, furious, demanding her valet fetch her Mercedes.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Robles," the concierge said nervously, a moment our investigator caught perfectly on a hidden microphone. "Your membership card was declined for the brunch tab. It says the account has been frozen."
"Frozen? Don't be ridiculous! Run it again!" Carmen shrieked, her composed mask completely slipping.
Alexander smiled darkly at his screen. "I bought the debt on her primary business lines this morning. I called it all in at 2:00 PM. She’s over-leveraged by three million dollars. By Monday, the banks will seize her house."
I watched my ex-husband with a mixture of awe and terror. This was the man I had divorced. The man who viewed human lives like pieces on a chessboard. But today, I thanked God he was on our side.
Back at the apartment, Javier's phone calls were becoming frantic.
He called Sofia fifty times. He called me. We let them all go to voicemail.
His voicemails evolved from patronizing annoyance to genuine, unhinged panic.
“Sofia, please pick up. There’s a huge misunderstanding at the firm. I need you to sign the condo papers today so I can secure a loan. Sofia, please! They’re threatening me with jail time!”
He didn't care about her. He never did. He only cared about the money that could save him.
At 5:00 PM, the final phase of Alexander's plan began.
"They're desperate now," Alexander announced, checking a GPS tracker he had somehow managed to have placed on Javier's car. "Desperate animals corner themselves. They are heading here."
I felt a spike of adrenaline. "To my apartment?"
"Yes. Javier thinks you are two weak women he can intimidate into fixing his life," Alexander said, loosening his silk tie and unbuttoning his jacket. "He thinks he can force the signature before the police get involved."
Sofia tensed, instinctively touching the swollen side of her face.
Alexander walked over, kneeling in front of her.
"You do not have to be in the room, Sofia. You can go to the bedroom. I will handle this."
Sofia looked at her father. I saw the same cold, steel resolve in her eyes that I had seen in his for twenty years.
"No," Sofia said, her voice steady. "I want to watch them break."
Ten minutes later, the heavy footsteps sounded in the hallway.
We didn't wait for the knock.
Alexander unlocked the deadbolt and left the door slightly ajar, stepping back into the shadows of the hallway, completely out of sight.
Sofia and I sat on the living room sofa, waiting.
The door slammed open.
Carmen and Javier stormed in, looking nothing like the polished socialites from the day before. Javier was sweating profusely, his tie gone, his eyes wild. Carmen's hair was messy, her makeup smeared from rage.
"Where are the damn papers, Elena?!" Javier screamed, storming toward us. "You ruined my life! You sent that file to the partners, didn't you?! I will destroy you!"
Carmen pointed a shaking finger at Sofia. "You ungrateful little brat! You owe my family! Sign the deed right now or what happened last night will look like a joke!"
They were so blinded by rage, so focused on us, they didn't even notice the door closing softly behind them.
"I think," a deep, chilling voice echoed from the shadows, "you have fundamentally misunderstood the situation."
May you like
Javier froze. Carmen whipped around.
Alexander stepped into the light.
