Chapter 12 - The Dawn We Built

Nine months later, the private maternity wing of Chicago’s Obsidian Medical Center was quiet except for the soft, rhythmic hum of monitors and the sweet, steady breathing of a newborn baby resting against my chest.
Alessandro stood by the hospital window, looking out over the sparkling Chicago skyline just as the first rays of dawn broke through the clouds, painting the sky in shades of gold and amber. The little boy sleeping in my arms possessed the exact same intense amber eyes as his father.
The door opened quietly, and Liam walked in holding a giant blue teddy bear that looked ridiculous in his arms. He grinned from ear to ear, walking over to gently brush the baby’s tiny hand with his finger.
“Well, little guy,” Liam whispered with a smile. “Your mom is officially the toughest person in Chicago, and your dad owns half the city. You’re going to be completely spoiled.”
Alessandro walked over from the window, wrapping one arm around my shoulders while gently placing his other hand beneath our son’s head. He looked down at both of us with a depth of emotion that completely erased the cold billionaire facade he wore for the rest of the world.

“Welcome home, little Alexander,” Alessandro murmured softly, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead.
I leaned my head against his shoulder, listening to the steady beat of his heart, knowing that every terrifying secret, every night of running, and every tear had led me exactly where I was supposed to be. We had finally built a home where the porch light would never go out.
