Chapter 8 - Sanctuary and Secrets

The helicopter touched down on a sprawling, secluded estate surrounded by towering iron gates and dense pine forests far away from the chaotic neon lights of downtown Chicago. The estate looked like a modern fortress built of glass, stone, and absolute power, guarded by armed professionals stationed at every corner.
Alessandro led me inside through a private entrance into a grand, warm foyer lit by a massive crystal chandelier. A middle-aged housekeeper rushed forward with a warm woolen blanket and a cup of hot chamomile tea.
“Miss Vance, please sit down by the fire,” the housekeeper said gently, her eyes full of maternal concern. “Mr. Vitali has instructed us to ensure you have everything you need.”
I sat on the plush velvet sofa near the roaring stone fireplace, wrapping the blanket tightly around my shoulders while staring blankly into the flames. Alessandro stood by the window, speaking quietly into his encrypted satellite phone as he coordinated security sweeps across the city.
A few minutes later, he ended the call, walked over, and placed a warm cup of coffee on the table before sitting down opposite me.
“Your apartment was empty when my team arrived,” Alessandro said quietly, watching my reaction. “Your friend Liam had already left to pick up groceries, but my men intercepted him before he returned. He’s safe in a secure guesthouse on the perimeter of this property.”
I let out a shaky breath of relief, tears of exhaustion finally spilling over my eyelashes. “Thank god. He didn’t deserve to get dragged into this nightmare.”
“He’s your friend, which makes him under my protection now,” Alessandro stated firmly, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. “Now, Elizabeth, it’s time to stop running. Tell me everything about your uncle, the trust fund, and why you were hiding.”
For the next hour, sitting by the fire in the safety of the Vitali fortress, I told Alessandro everything. I told him about the forged embezzlement documents, the night my parents died in a suspicious car crash that the police never fully investigated, and how my uncle threatened to ruin my life if I ever came forward.
Alessandro listened in absolute silence, his amber eyes growing darker and colder with every word until his expression resembled sculpted stone.
“Your uncle thinks he can steal from the Vance family and threaten the mother of my child,” Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping an octave into a tone that promised absolute destruction. “He just signed his own death warrant.”

“We can’t just go to war with him, Alessandro,” I pleaded, reaching out to touch his hand. “He has powerful political connections in Chicago. If we make the wrong move, he’ll use the media to paint me as a criminal.”
Alessandro turned his hand over, interlocking his fingers with mine and giving them a reassuring squeeze. “Let him try. My family didn't build an empire by playing by their rules.”
