Chapter 4 - Uncovering the Rot

The more we dug, the deeper the rot went. Julian’s betrayal wasn't a sudden lapse in judgment; it was a deeply ingrained pattern of deception that spanned years. As I continued my agonizing physical therapy—now managing to shift my legs slightly on my own—Sarah and Marcus unearthed the full extent of the conspiracy.

It turned out that Eleanor’s financial situation was far direr than she had ever let on. While I had graciously paid off her mortgage years ago, assuming she was just a poor widow struggling with basic bills, she had a secret vice: high-stakes gambling.

“We found the paper trail,” Sarah explained during our Tuesday morning briefing, passing me a stack of casino markers and bank statements. “Eleanor owes roughly half a million dollars to several less-than-reputable creditors in Atlantic City and Vegas. Julian has been using a portion of the embezzled Vanguard funds to keep her kneecaps intact.”

“So the power of attorney, the company proxies, the lake house deed...” I murmured, piecing the puzzle together.

“Exactly,” Sarah confirmed. “They needed a massive influx of liquid cash, fast. If you signed those papers in the delivery room, Julian would have legally transferred the lake house to his name, mortgaged it to the hilt, and used your voting proxies to vote himself a massive 'emergency' executive bonus to cover the rest of Eleanor's debts and fund his new life with Victoria.”

The sheer audacity of it left me breathless. They had weaponized my high-risk pregnancy. They had banked on the surgical trauma and the devastating news of my paralysis to force my hand in a moment of absolute vulnerability.

Julian, meanwhile, was getting desperate. Cut off from the company funds and blacklisted by my security team, he began a frantic smear campaign. He reached out to several business publications and local tabloids, spinning a tragic tale of a husband locked out of his own life.

“CEO’s Tragic Postpartum Breakdown,” read one headline that Sarah showed me. In the article, an 'anonymous source' (clearly Julian) claimed that the stress of the paralysis had caused me to suffer severe postpartum psychosis, that I was hoarding our newborn, and that I was indiscriminately firing loyal family members due to paranoia.

“He’s setting the stage,” I observed, tossing the iPad onto the bed. “He’s building a public narrative of my incompetence.”

“Which leads us to this,” Sarah said, her expression turning grim as she pulled a legal document from her briefcase. “I was served an hour ago. Julian has filed an emergency ex parte motion for full temporary custody of Hazel, as well as a petition for a conservatorship over you, citing your 'mental instability and severe physical incapacitation.'”

I felt the blood drain from my face. A conservatorship. He wanted to pull a Britney Spears on me. If a judge granted it, Julian would have total legal control over my medical decisions, my finances, and my company. He could dismiss the embezzlement investigation, fire Sarah and Marcus, and take my daughter away from me.

“Can he do this?” I asked, my voice trembling for the first time since the delivery room.

“He can try,” Sarah said fiercely, grabbing my hand. “But he’s relying on the element of surprise and the fact that you’re stuck in this bed. The hearing is scheduled for Friday. Three days from now. The judge allowed an expedited hearing because Julian claimed Hazel is in immediate danger.”

I looked at my legs. I had regained some sensation, a painful, tingling pins-and-needles feeling, but I couldn't bear weight yet. I couldn't walk into that courtroom.

But I didn't need to walk to destroy him.

“Sarah,” I said, my voice hardening into steel. “Call the hospital administrators. Arrange for a medical transport. I don't care if they have to wheel me into that courtroom in a full-body cast. I am going to be at that hearing. And I want you to subpoena Victoria.”

“Victoria? She’ll plead the fifth, or lie.”

“Let her,” I smirked. “Because when the judge hears what we have, she won't have a choice but to turn on him to save herself. Let’s prepare for war.”
