Chapter 5 - The Custody Battle and the Ambush

The courtroom was heavily paneled in dark oak, smelling of floor wax and old paper. The tension in the room was palpable as the bailiff pushed my specialized medical wheelchair down the center aisle. I was dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit—the jacket resting perfectly over my shoulders, the skirt draped neatly over my unmoving legs. Hazel was not with me; she was safely guarded at the hospital by private security.

Julian sat at the petitioner's table, flanked by an expensive, aggressive-looking lawyer he had likely hired on contingency, promising a payout from my estate. Julian looked haggard, the stress of sleeping in his car and dodging Eleanor’s creditors taking a visible toll. When he saw me roll in, he tried to project an aura of sorrowful concern, but I caught the flash of panic in his eyes.

Eleanor was seated in the gallery, glaring at me with unvarnished hatred. Victoria sat a few rows behind her, looking nervous and out of place in a conservative gray dress.

Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense woman with sharp features and peering glasses, called the court to order.

Julian’s attorney, a man named Sterling, began his opening statement. He painted a heartbreaking picture of Julian: a devoted husband and father, wrongfully locked out by a wife suffering from a tragic, medical-induced psychotic break.

“Your Honor,” Sterling pontificated, “Mrs. Vance is tragically paralyzed from the waist down. She is physically incapable of caring for a newborn. Furthermore, her erratic behavior—locking her husband out, freezing accounts without cause—demonstrates a severe mental break. We are merely asking for temporary custody to ensure the child’s safety, and a conservatorship to protect the family’s assets from Mrs. Vance’s paranoia.”

Judge Harrison turned her gaze to my table. “Ms. Thorne, your client’s actions do seem... extreme, given the circumstances.”

Sarah stood up, smoothing her skirt. “Your Honor, my client’s actions were not the result of paranoia, but of absolute, terrifying clarity. We do not contest that Mrs. Vance is temporarily paralyzed. We do, however, contest the petitioner’s claim of being a devoted husband acting in the child’s best interest.”

“Get to the point, Counsel,” the judge said.

“The point, Your Honor, is that Julian Vance’s concern is not for his daughter, but for his access to my client’s fortune—a fortune he attempted to extort from her while she was lying in a hospital bed, six hours after major surgery.”

Sterling objected immediately. “Outrageous allegations, Your Honor! Counsel is trying to smear my client to cover her own client’s mental instability.”

Sarah smiled, picking up a small thumb drive. “Your Honor, we submit Defense Exhibit A into evidence. It is a continuous, unedited audio recording made legally by my client in her hospital room. We request permission to play it for the court.”

Julian stood up, his face ashen. “You can't play that! That’s... that’s a violation of privacy!”

“Objection overruled,” Judge Harrison said, her eyes narrowing at Julian’s outburst. “Play the audio.”

Sarah plugged the drive into the court’s media system. The speakers crackled, and suddenly, the courtroom was filled with the clear, undeniable voices of Julian, Victoria, and Eleanor.

“You said she’d be sedated,” Victoria’s voice echoed. “Genevieve’s not going anywhere,” Julian replied coldly.

I watched the judge’s face as she listened to Eleanor demanding I sign the papers. The courtroom held its collective breath as the sickening sound of the slap resonated through the speakers, followed instantly by Hazel’s terrified screams.

“Who will believe a paralyzed woman?” Eleanor’s sneering voice filled the room, sealing her own fate.

Judge Harrison slammed her gavel down so hard it echoed like a gunshot. The silence that followed was absolute. She glared down at Julian, who had sunk into his chair, covering his face with his hands. Sterling, his lawyer, slowly packed up his briefcase, visibly distancing himself from his client.

“Mr. Vance,” the judge said, her voice dripping with pure, unadulterated disgust. “In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely heard anything as vile, predatory, and despicable as what I have just witnessed.”

She turned to Eleanor in the gallery. “Bailiff, take Eleanor Vance into custody. Her bail is hereby revoked based on this clear evidence of assault and coercion.”

Eleanor shrieked as two deputies grabbed her arms, dragging her out of the courtroom while she screamed Julian’s name.

“As for custody,” Judge Harrison continued, ignoring the commotion, “the petition is denied with prejudice. I am granting full, sole custody to Genevieve Vance, and issuing a permanent restraining order against Julian Vance. You are not to come within five hundred yards of your wife or daughter. Furthermore, I am forwarding this audio recording to the District Attorney’s office for review of criminal extortion charges.”

Julian looked at me, completely shattered. But I wasn't done. The custody battle was over, but the corporate execution was just beginning.
