Chapter 7 - Turning on Each Other

The fallout was swift, brutal, and entirely public. When a high-profile executive is arrested in front of his board of directors, the media smells blood in the water. The story exploded across financial news networks and local tabloids alike. But this time, I controlled the narrative.
Vance Development released a pristine, transparent statement detailing the internal audit that caught the fraud, reassuring investors of the company’s stability. Our stock actually saw a slight bump, as the market responded positively to a CEO who ruthlessly purged corruption from her own ranks.
For Julian, Victoria, and Eleanor, the nightmare was just beginning. There is no loyalty among thieves, and when faced with decades in federal prison, their alliance shattered instantly.
Victoria was the first to crack. The FBI had picked her up for questioning regarding her role in the Vanguard Logistics shell company. The moment she realized she was facing federal racketeering charges, she threw Julian under the bus. She signed a proffer agreement, agreeing to testify that Julian was the mastermind who had manipulated her into setting up the LLC and signing the documents. In exchange for her testimony, she was allowed to plead down to a lesser charge of accessory to fraud, though she still faced a minimum of two years in a minimum-security facility.
Julian, sitting in a holding cell because his assets were frozen and he couldn't post the million-dollar bail, tried to use Eleanor as his scapegoat. He claimed through his public defender that he only stole the money because his mother’s gambling debts put his family in danger from mob-affiliated loan sharks. He tried to paint himself as a desperate son, but the audio recording from the hospital room—which the DA had happily entered into evidence for the extortion charges—destroyed any sympathy a jury might have had. The tape proved he wasn't a desperate victim; he was a cold, calculating predator.
Eleanor, meanwhile, was completely ruined. Her bail had been revoked after the courtroom incident. Sitting in a county jail cell, awaiting trial for assault and extortion, she learned that the loan sharks she owed money to had placed liens on her home. The house was foreclosed on, leaving her with absolutely nothing. When a desperate Eleanor tried to call me from jail, begging for forgiveness and asking me to pay for a real lawyer, I didn't even answer. I let it go straight to voicemail, saving the recording for my own amusement.
The divorce was finalized in record time. Because Julian had committed gross financial misconduct and fraud against the marital estate, the prenuptial agreement (which he had arrogantly assumed he could bypass) was enforced with extreme prejudice. He walked away with zero alimony, zero claim to the business, and zero access to the family trust. I retained full sole custody of Hazel, with Julian stripped of all parental rights given his impending incarceration and the restraining order.

I watched the legal proceedings from the comfort of my home office, bouncing Hazel on my knee. My legs were healing faster now. The stress and adrenaline of the fight had pushed my body to its limits, but with the threat neutralized, I could focus fully on my recovery.
I had won. I had protected my father’s legacy, my daughter’s future, and my own life. But as I watched the news report detailing Julian’s plea deal—a guilty plea resulting in a twelve-year federal prison sentence—I felt no pity. Only the deep, satisfying warmth of total vindication.
