Chapter 3 - Documenting the Damage

The sterile smell of the emergency room was a sharp contrast to the smoke and expensive wine of my kitchen. I sat on the examination bed, my right arm resting on a sterile drape while a trauma nurse carefully cleaned and dressed the second and third-degree burns across my palm and fingers. The pain was excruciating, a constant, throbbing drumbeat, but beneath it, a profound sense of clarity had settled over me.
Detective Vega stood by the door, watching quietly until the nurse finished wrapping my hand in thick white gauze and administered a dose of intravenous painkillers. Once we were alone, Vega pulled up a chair.
"He's in holding," Vega said, her tone professional but laced with underlying empathy. "His parents too. Harold is claiming he had his hearing aids turned off and didn't know what was happening, but Linda is screaming for a lawyer. Daniel has invoked his right to remain silent, but he looks like he's going to throw up."
"He's never lost control of a narrative before," I said, my voice hoarse. I reached into my purse with my uninjured left hand and pulled out a small, encrypted USB drive. I handed it to Vega. "You'll need this."
Vega looked at the drive. "What's on it?"
"Everything," I replied, leaning back against the pillows. "I spent six years as a prosecutor before Daniel convinced me to leave the DA's office to 'focus on our marriage.' He thought he was isolating me. He forgot he was living with a woman who builds impenetrable criminal cases for a living."
I explained what was on the drive. It wasn't just tonight's video. For the past fourteen months, I had been meticulously documenting every bruise, every broken dish, every threatening text message. I had audio recordings of his explosive rages hidden in encrypted cloud folders. I had bank statements proving financial abuse, showing how he had slowly siphoned my savings into offshore accounts under his parents' names to leave me destitute if I ever tried to leave.
"I didn't just want him arrested, Marisol," I whispered, the painkillers beginning to dull the sharpest edges of my agony. "If it's just a he-said-she-said, his family's money will buy him a defense team that will drag my name through the mud. They'll say I'm hysterical. They'll say I burned myself for attention. I needed a locked-room trap. I needed undeniable, irrefutable proof that would strip away his mask entirely."

Vega pocketed the drive, a look of profound respect crossing her features. "You gave us a live broadcast of a felony, Clara. With this drive... we aren't just going to charge him. We're going to bury him."
I closed my eyes, the exhaustion of three years of constant hyper-vigilance finally catching up to me. I was safe for the night, but I knew the real war was only just beginning. Daniel came from a dynasty of wealth and influence. When the sun came up, the Vance family machine would wake up, and they would try to destroy me. But I was ready.
