Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

Within forty-eight hours, Daniel was out on a two-million-dollar bail, and the Vance family's crisis PR team was working overtime. I had retreated to a secure safe house arranged by Vega, my location known only to her and the lead prosecutor, a sharp-witted former colleague of mine named David Ross.

The media circus began on a Tuesday. I watched from the small television in the safe house as Daniel’s high-powered defense attorney, Richard Sterling, held a press conference on the courthouse steps. Sterling was a shark, famous for getting rich men out of terrible situations.

"My client, Daniel Vance, is the victim of a calculated, malicious setup by a deeply troubled woman," Sterling announced to the sea of microphones. "Clara Vance has a history of severe mental health struggles. The video in question was heavily edited and manipulated, a desperate attempt to extort the Vance family for financial gain amidst a failing marriage. Daniel is a pillar of this community, and we will prove his innocence in court."

They didn't stop at press conferences. Anonymous sources began leaking stories to the tabloids. They claimed I was a bitter, failed lawyer who couldn't handle domestic life. They dug up an old prescription for anxiety medication I took during law school and painted me as an unstable addict. Linda, released on bail for her accessory charges, gave a tearful, soft-focus interview to a local news station, claiming she was terrified of me and that I had a history of self-harm.

"Don't look at it," David Ross told me over the phone later that evening, hearing the stress in my voice. "It's standard defense playbook. They attack the victim's credibility when they can't attack the facts."

"It's working, David," I said, staring at my bandaged hand. "Half the comments online are calling me a gold-digger who burned her own hand for a payout."

"Let them talk," David replied calmly. "Sterling doesn't know about the USB drive. He only thinks we have the kitchen footage, which he plans to claim is a deepfake or out of context. He has no idea the mountain of evidence we are sitting on during discovery. When we drop it on him, he's going to choke."

I took a deep breath, grounding myself. I couldn't let their gaslighting break my resolve now. Daniel wanted me to feel small, to feel crazy, to doubt my own reality. That was how he had controlled me for years. But I wasn't the terrified wife anymore; I was the star witness for the prosecution. I spent the next three weeks in the safe house, working with David, reviewing my own files, preparing for the preliminary hearings. I turned my trauma into a legal strategy. I was building my own armor, piece by piece.
