Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Vance Dynasty

The sheer volume of the evidence in discovery broke the Vance family apart from the inside. Once Sterling reviewed the files, the reality of the situation set in. They couldn't win a trial. The evidence was too overwhelming, the paper trail too clean.

Sterling called a meeting in his office, inviting David and me for a potential plea negotiation. I sat across the glass conference table from Daniel, Linda, and their lawyer. Daniel looked exhausted; the stress of public scrutiny and impending doom had aged him ten years.

"We are willing to offer a plea," Sterling said, steepling his fingers. "Daniel will plead guilty to a lesser charge of simple assault. Probation, mandatory anger management, and a generous financial settlement for Clara in the divorce. In exchange, the charges against Linda Vance are dropped."

David looked at me. It was my call. I leaned forward, resting my injured hand on the glass.

"No," I said softly.

Linda bristled, her aristocratic face twisting in rage. "You greedy little—"

"Quiet, Linda," Sterling snapped, losing his patience with his own client.

"I don't want your money, Daniel," I said, looking directly into my husband's hollow eyes. "I want you in a cell. You tortured me for years behind closed doors, and you," I turned my gaze to Linda, "you poured wine and laughed while he did it. The state is offering no plea deals. Daniel pleads guilty to Aggravated Assault, and he serves a minimum of five years. Linda pleads guilty to Accessory, and she does a year in county."

"You're out of your mind," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling. "I will destroy you on the stand. I'll make sure everyone knows how pathetic you were."

"You already tried," I replied calmly, standing up. "I'll see you in court."

The refusal of the plea deal sent the Vance family into a tailspin. Desperate to save herself from a prison sentence, Linda did the unthinkable: she turned on her own son. Three days before the trial, Linda's separate legal counsel contacted the DA's office. She offered to testify against Daniel, confirming that the abuse had been ongoing and that Daniel had actively planned to hide my financial assets, in exchange for immunity.

When Daniel found out his mother had betrayed him to save her own skin, the dynasty shattered. Harold suffered a mild heart attack from the stress, further delaying the proceedings but cementing the collapse of their united front. The monsters had finally turned on each other, tearing themselves apart in the light of day.
