Chapter 4 - Blood and Silence (Eleven Weeks Earlier)

To understand the magnitude of Ryan's miscalculation, one must understand what happened exactly eleven weeks prior to the gala, on the very day he casually told me to have my lawyers draft the papers. I didn't call a standard Manhattan divorce attorney. Instead, I packed a small overnight bag, drove my car out of the city, and headed deep into the heavily wooded, secluded estates of Long Island. I was going to see a man Ryan believed was nothing more than a moderately successful, retired import-export businessman from Sicily. Ryan had never bothered to ask why powerful politicians stood up respectfully whenever my father entered a room, or why certain elite names in the financial sector were spoken with extreme caution around him. My father was Salvatore Moretti.

For six years, I had deliberately distanced myself from my family's immense wealth, shadow influence, and formidable legacy because I wanted a "normal" life. I wanted to be loved for who I was, not feared for my surname. Ryan thought he had married a quiet, middle-class girl with a modest inheritance. When the heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate swung open and I walked into my father's sprawling study, the prodigal daughter had finally returned. Salvatore looked up from his leather armchair, the lines on his face softening as he saw my unshed tears. I didn't have to explain much. I simply handed him the dossier the investigator had compiled, along with the recording of Ryan prioritizing his earnings report over our marriage. My father looked at the documents, his dark eyes growing frighteningly cold. "You tried to be a civilian, mia cara," he said softly, kissing my cheek. "Now, let us show him what happens when you awaken a Moretti."

It was in that very study, an hour later, that I was formally introduced to the man who would become the architect of Ryan’s destruction. The heavy oak doors opened, and in walked Luca DeSantis. Luca was a legendary billionaire investor, a ruthless corporate raider known in financial circles as 'The Executioner.' He was devastatingly handsome, with piercing gray eyes and a sharp, tailored suit that commanded the room. More importantly, Luca’s family had deep, unshakable ties to the Morettis that spanned generations. Men like Ryan Caldwell spent their entire pathetic careers begging for a five-minute pitch meeting with Luca, hoping for a fraction of his capital. Luca took one look at me, then at the photos on my father's desk, and I saw a dangerous, thrilling smile form on his lips.

"So, this is the husband," Luca said, his voice a smooth, lethal baritone. He picked up a photo of Ryan. "A man who builds his castle on sand and thinks he is a king. Salvatore, if I may, I would consider it a personal favor to handle the financial dismantling of Mr. Caldwell." My father nodded in agreement, but I stepped forward, my voice finally finding its steel. "No," I told them both, holding Luca's gaze firmly. "You can help me gather the gasoline, but I am the one who strikes the match." Luca looked surprised for a fraction of a second before his eyes filled with profound respect. "As you wish," he murmured, bowing his head slightly. That afternoon, the three of us began meticulously planning the absolute obliteration of Ryan Caldwell.
