Chapter 7 - The Fall of an Empire

I walked slowly toward him, the sound of my heels clicking against the marble sounding like the ticking of a bomb. Every eye in the ballroom was locked onto us; the cameras, sensing fresh blood, began flashing again in a chaotic frenzy. "Hello, Ryan," I said, my voice echoing clearly in the quiet room. "I hope you don't mind that I brought some family to your little celebration." Ryan's mouth opened and closed like a dying fish. "What... what are you doing here?" he stammered, his polished facade entirely obliterated. "You said you wouldn't cause a scene before the earnings report."
"I lied," I replied smoothly, popping open the clasp of my velvet clutch. I pulled out the crisp, legally binding documents and the gold pen, pressing them forcefully into his chest. "These are the divorce papers you asked for. They stipulate that you are transferring all your voting shares and liquid assets to me, effective immediately." Ryan let out a breathless, frantic laugh, trying to play it off for the crowd. "You're insane. I'm not signing anything right now, certainly not turning over my company to you." It was then that Luca DeSantis stepped smoothly to my side, his voice carrying the weight of a judge passing a death sentence.

"You will sign them, Caldwell," Luca said, his tone chillingly conversational. "Because if you don't, the USB drive in the lady's hand goes directly to the federal prosecutors standing by outside. We have every wire transfer, every doctored ledger, and every offshore account you used to embezzle thirty million dollars from your investors." A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. The board members of Ryan's company, who were standing just a few feet away, looked at him in absolute horror. "Furthermore," Luca continued, raising his voice so the entire room could hear, "DeSantis Holdings is initiating a hostile takeover of your firm tomorrow morning, and Mr. Moretti here has ensured that not a single bank in this city will extend you a line of credit to fight it."
Ryan collapsed to his knees, not out of dramatic flair, but because his legs physically gave out. He looked at Vanessa for support, but she was already backing away rapidly, her eyes wide with self-preservation, abandoning him the second his wealth and power evaporated. He was entirely, utterly alone. Surrounded by the clicking of cameras and the disgusted murmurs of his former peers, trembling and weeping openly, Ryan Caldwell took the gold pen from my hand. Right there on the marble floor, amid the shattered glass and spilled champagne, he signed his empire, his fortune, and his freedom away to the woman he thought was too weak to fight back.
