Chapter 6 - The Shattered Glass

Which brings us back to the Waldorf Astoria, beneath the dazzling crystal chandeliers. That was exactly why the kiss at the gala did not destroy me. Ryan had enthusiastically chosen the stage himself, purposefully surrounding himself with cameras, institutional investors, conservative board members, ruthless politicians, and people who knew exactly how much public appearances could cost a man’s career. He had wanted an audience to witness his triumph. I was merely obliging him by giving that audience a finale they would never forget. As the polite applause for his kiss with Vanessa began to fade into the ambient chatter of the ballroom, the atmosphere suddenly shifted. The air grew dense.

A man stepped quietly from the shadows behind Ryan, his movements fluid and commanding. It was Luca DeSantis. He was immediately followed by another, older man whose sheer presence made several powerful guests—including the mayor and two senators—suddenly stop talking and instinctively step back in deference. It was my father, Salvatore Moretti. The murmurs sweeping through the crowd changed from polite gossip to urgent, hushed whispers of shock. Ryan, still high on his own hubris, turned around with the smug smile still plastered on his face to see what the commotion was about. And then, as his eyes registered the two titans standing before him, all the color violently drained from his face, leaving him looking like a sick, terrified ghost.

Ryan had spent years desperately trying to secure a meeting with Luca DeSantis, and he knew instantly that Luca’s presence at his charity gala was not a coincidence. He looked from Luca’s cold, predatory smirk to my father’s impassive, terrifyingly calm expression. Ryan had always assumed Salvatore was a nobody, but seeing the entire room part for him like the Red Sea finally shattered his delusion. And then, moving deliberately and gracefully, I stepped out from the darkness behind them, the diamonds around my neck catching the light. I was wearing a breathtaking, midnight-blue gown that Luca had picked out, my head held high, looking nothing like the broken, weeping wife Ryan had imagined.

Ryan’s jaw went slack. The expensive champagne glass literally slipped from his trembling fingers and shattered spectacularly against the polished marble floor, the sharp sound echoing through the sudden, deafening silence of the ballroom. For the first time that night, Vanessa, sensing the catastrophic shift in power, nervously moved away from him and stared directly at me, her face pale. Ryan looked desperately from Luca, to my powerful father, and then down to my bare left hand, where his diamond ring was noticeably absent. A profound, suffocating panic entered his eyes. He still did not know what I was carrying tightly inside my black velvet clutch—or that the empire he had built on lies was about to burn to ashes in front of four hundred witnesses.
