Chapter 10 - Turning on Each Other

By Monday, the Vance empire was a burning ship, and the rats were eating each other.

I sat in Raymond’s office, listening to the federal prosecutor on speakerphone.

“Celeste Hale just handed over two years of text messages,” the prosecutor announced.

“She’s claiming Adrian manipulated her into hiding the stolen funds.”

“What about Marisol?” I asked, looking at Raymond.

“Marisol took a plea deal,” the prosecutor laughed grimly.

“She’s testifying that Adrian explicitly ordered her to deny Lily’s medical coverage to keep the slush fund intact.”

My breath caught in my throat.

Hearing it confirmed out loud made the room spin.

He knew.

Adrian knew what he was doing when he denied the medication. It wasn’t a mistake.

“He sacrificed his own daughter for a bonus,” I whispered, my nails digging into my palms.

“It’s premeditated depraved indifference,” the prosecutor said. “We’re upgrading the charges.”

“To what?” Raymond asked, leaning forward.

“Manslaughter.”

A heavy, absolute silence filled the office.

Adrian wasn’t just going down for fraud.

He was going down for killing our little girl.

“Nail him to the wall,” I said, and hung up the phone.
