Chapter 5 - The Quarter Allowance

I didn’t leave the building after taking the boardroom.

I walked directly down to the executive financial suite.

Marisol was sitting at her desk, typing furiously on her computer, a smug smile on her face.

“Vivian?” she blinked in surprise as I walked in. “Mr. Vance doesn’t allow family on this floor.”

“I’m not family anymore, Marisol,” I said, leaning over her desk.

I pulled a single sheet of paper from my briefcase and laid it over her keyboard.

It was the medical denial form for Lily’s heart medication.

Marisol swallowed hard, her eyes darting away from the paper.

“That was a standard policy procedure,” she stammered. “It exceeded the dependent cap.”

“The cap you and Adrian implemented last month to inflate your quarterly bonuses,” I stated.

“I was just doing my job!” she defended, her voice pitching higher.

“Your job was to manage risk,” I said, my voice dropping dangerously low.

“But you forgot that I am an actuary. I see every variable.”

I pulled a second folder out and dropped it next to the denial form.

“I spent last night going through the company’s offshore accounts.”

Marisol visibly flinched.

“I know about the shell companies you set up in the Caymans to hide Adrian’s embezzlement,” I whispered.

“You can’t prove anything,” she choked out, her hands trembling.

“I already sent the IP logs to the SEC,” I smiled coldly.

Marisol stood up so fast her chair crashed to the floor.

“You’re insane!” she screamed.

“No,” I replied, turning toward the door. “I’m just adjusting the budget.”
