Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Thursday night, the rain poured down over the city.

I stood across the street from the Vance estate, holding an umbrella, watching the red and blue flashing lights.

Five police cruisers were parked on the circular driveway.

Agents in windbreakers were carrying boxes of hard drives and files out the front door.

Adrian was shoved out onto the porch, his hands cuffed behind his back.

He looked disheveled, a far cry from the immaculate man who had pushed me into the fountain.

He saw me standing under the streetlamp.

“Vivian!” he screamed, thrashing against the officers holding his arms.

“You did this! You framed me!”

I didn’t say a word. I just watched.

A detective walked over to me, holding a clipboard to shield it from the rain.

“Mrs. Vance? We found the offshore ledgers right where you said they’d be.”

“Thank you, Detective,” I nodded politely.

“He’s claiming you orchestrated the whole thing,” the detective sighed, looking back at Adrian.

“I was a stay-at-home mother caring for a dying child,” I stated quietly.

“I haven’t had access to a company computer in four years.”

The detective’s expression softened with immediate sympathy.

“I know. We have Marisol’s testimony. She rolled on him the second we brought her in.”

I watched as they pushed my husband into the back of a police car.

He pressed his face against the wet glass, screaming something I couldn’t hear.

I turned my back and walked away into the dark.
